Our next stop was Arenal Lodge on the northern shore of Lake Arenal and quite near the active Arenal volcano, which we got to see erupting – very impressive.
There were plenty of rainforest tracks to explore and birdlife was quite prolific.
This is a Broad-billed Motmot (Electron platyrhynchum) one of four quite spectacular species of motmot that we saw.
They live within and on the edges of rainforest, typically perching several metres off the ground waiting motionless for prey to wander by. They take large invertebrates, lizards and frogs.
The Broad-billed Motmot is found on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica, from the coast to 1,000m. It is also found in Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, the Amazon basin of Brazil and northern Bolivia.
Thanks for looking

Hello Chris,
Fine capture of a Broad-billed Motmot with excellent sharpness, colours and well composed in its natural habit. Great POV and pose too. Reminds one little of a bee-eater.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

Hello Chris,
I've only seen the Blue-crowned Motmot and that was fantastic! I didn't know there were four species of Motmot! This one is gorgeous in fabulous colours and I love its plumage and tail feathers. Brilliant capture of this beauty in a fine pose and against a natural background.
Many thanks, Ulla

Excellent capture of this beautiful bird!
I really like the off-centre composition and wide-crop that shows us this bird's habitat.
Good colours but I think they could use a boost of saturation.... however they are nice and natural.
Great DOF and BG.
Sharp with great clarity.
Also a boost of contrast would make the image "pop"... it seems a little flat to me at the moment.
I did a workshop to show this... I hope you don't mind!
Please tell me your views on it.

Nevertheless a very pleasing image of this magnificent bird.
Well done Chris,
Joe

Hello Chris,
What an excellent photo of this very special and beautiful bird. The colours can use a bit more saturation, but the details are very good and the POV and composition are marvelous. Great environment.
