[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Toucans are one species everyone with an interest in birds wants to see. It was so great to be able to see five species in the wild and photograph four of them on our trip to Central America. I’ve already posted the Emerald Toucanet here, this one is the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii) an equally impressive bird.

The Chestnut-mandibled Toucan is found from Nicaragua through Costa Rica, Panama to Columbia and Ecuador. They live in predominantly lowland rainforest where they feed on a variety of fruits and berries. We only saw them on the eastern side of Costa Rica.

The male is 56 cm (22 in) long and weighs 750g and the female is slightly less. The plumage is the same in both sexs and their song is a strange tee de, te de.

Like the other birds I’ve posted from La Selva Verde lodge, it was raining and rather gloomy while we were there, which is why this shot appears a bit dark. Despite the rain the toucan enjoyed the free bananas placed on the feeding table nearby. Meanwhile, we sat in the comfort of a covered bird hide and enjoyed the show.

Hi Chris

Toucans have always been special birds in my mind and i always wanted to get a nice picture of one...you beat me to it and you've managed a superb one! I hope one day i could come back home with a similar result :)

I think this bird - due to its features - will stand out easily out of every surroundings :) Still, i very much like what you did with the DOF here. The blurred BG looks great.
The fill-in flash is also absolutely terrific and it really brings out the extra details on the bird as well as making those vivid colors stand out even better.
Very neat and sharp and also very well composed!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Cris
this is a very nice colors
very good sharp and detail
well done.

Hi Chris,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful toucan, one of my favorite bird species. Yes it definitely rains there a lot but then that's why they call them rainforest. I was at La Selva, I remember the first night as I was very excited to be there. Trying to get to sleep was virtually impossible as the cicada's were so loud, felt like they were drilling into my head, but none the less, it is a beautiful place to visit. Did you happen to get a chance to photograph the Fiery-billed aracari? TFS :)
