During our boat trip up the Tacoles River we saw many birds including these beautiful Northern Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway). Although they are regarded as being a member of the family Falconidae, they are not a fast-flying member, in fact their flight is rather sluggish and they mainly eat carrion. They have a 1.25m wingspan and their long legs allow them to walk on the ground quite efficiently.
They are distributed from northern South America through parts of Central America most of Mexico and into Texas and Florida as well as the larger Caribbean islands. We saw them at several locations on the west coast of Costa Rica.

Hi Chris,
beautiful warm light and good composition with the bird looking sideways. Nice focus. Was it from the boat?
Well done and TFS

Chris,
As usual, an amazing shot....This time the light is beautiful!
You've done very well in capturing this shot, overall...

Hallo Chris
A very beautiful capture of this Crested Caracara. It seems to be a proud bird and it bears a resemblance to an aristocrat. Looking at it makes me think of the secretary bird, which I think is a very noble bird. This one of yours has a "snobbish" expression on its face and I think it will look quite cute with a pair of glasses. Like a real schoolmaster. I like the black patch of feathers on its head. Looks as if it is wearing a cap. All jokes aside. - The image is well composed with very good detail, exposure and sharpness. The markings on its chest are clearly visible and blend in well with the rest of the black plumage. The greenery as background highlights the colour and detail of the bird to a great extent. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hola Chris.
Saludos Chris.

Excellent composition and most wonderful pose of the bird, warm light and colors.
A ral joy to look at.

Warm regards, Harry

Presumably it is the gentle evening light which has given a golden tinge to the picture, Chris.
Caracara is a fine looking Falconide and you have shot it from a very good point of view which gives a fine impression of this elegant creature.
Thanks and regards.
