[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Heliconiinae belong to the most delicate butterflies of the American tropics which attract by their beautiful colours and their slow gliding flight.
The species shown is
- Heliconius cydno
- Nymphalidae, Heliconiinae.
It occurs in Central America from Mexico to Panama und further South to Colombia and Ecuador. Habitats range from sea level up to 1400m.
The picture was taken in central Costa Rica, Sierra de Tilaran (about 1200 m).
Vegetation does not always allow the optimal point of view. Furthermore, wings are not always opened wide so that they are in one plane. These circumstances often result in some parts of the object of interest being not completely sharp.

Hostplants of the caterpillars are several - also beautiful - Passiflora species.

Wingspan: about 70 mm.

- bright sun light
- ISO 200
- handheld

bonjour peter
le blanc de l'aile droite du papillon est un peu OE et a perdu ses details mais pour le reste c'est reussi.

This is an exotic species of the butterflies, Peter.
Very impressive frontal point of view. The vegetation provides a rich and natural background. Some butterflies are ever so restless they do not stop fluttering their wings completely. However, the focus in this case is very good.
