[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I present a collage of three honeycreeper species from Costa Rica. All then were shot at one of the feeding tables at the La Selva Verde lodge. Unfortunately the hide is a few metres distance from the table and surrounding bushes where these guys were coming too, so I could only capture relatively small image with my 300mm zoom. Despite this, I just to had to share the beauty of these amazingly coloured small nectar and fruit eaters. The Honeycreepers are part of the Tanager family.

On the top is the Green Honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza) which is 13 cm (5in) in size. The female is on the left and the stunning turquoise male is on the right. They are found in the canopy near forest clearings, forest edges, plantations and gardens below 1,500m from southern Mexico to the Amazon basin in Brazil. Fruit comprises about 60% of their diet, nectar 25% and insects 15%.

On the bottom left is the brilliant male Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus) which is only 10 cm (4 in) long. The female is a much duller olive green. This honeycreeper is also found in the rainforest canopy, forest edges, plantations and gardens below 1,200m They are distributed from southern Mexico to the Amazon basin and Bolivia. They are also found on the larger Caribbean islands. Insects are a more important source of food for these species, followed by fruit and nectar.

Finally on the bottom right is the male Shinning Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes lucidus) with his amazing bright yellow legs. The female is a dull yellow olive with blue streaking on the breast. They are also 10 cm (4 in) in length. This species is found below 1,200m in the forest canopy, plantations and adjacent gardens, where they feed on berries, insects and nectar. They have a more limited distribution occurring from southern Nicaragua to Panama.

Thanks for looking

Hello Chris,
Excellent collage showing three species of Honeycreeper.
I have seen two of these in Trinidad under similar circumstances, feeding tables. The Shiny Honeycreeper is very similar to the Pur ple, with its strikingly yellow legs. All four images are technically first class and superbly presented. Thanks for sharing another fine reminder of some fine birds that Ulla and I have seen some years ago.
