While we were busy at the hummingbird gallery near the entrance to the Monteverde Biological Reserve (Reserva Biologica Bosque Nubuso) a Gray Fox casually wandered out of the forest and onto the path in front of us. He seemed quite oblivious to the gasps that the small group of people emitted. He simply looked around, decided none of us was worth eating and continued on in to the forest. I was able to grab a few quick shots of which this one was the best.
The Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is a solitary hunter and ranges from southern Canada to through Central America to Venezuela and Columbia. They inhabit a range of habitats ranging from open brushland, through mountainous terrain to dense upland rainforest. Some authorities consider them to be the most primitive form of canids. They gtow to 1.25m long and weigh up to 7kg.
Gray fox have the unusual ability amongst canines in being able to climb trees and jump from branch to branch. The sleep through much of the day in tree hollows and hunt around dawn and dusk. They an omnivorous with small mammals and fruit being dominant in their diets. |

Hello Chris,
Fine capture of a Gray Fox in an opportunity well taken. The POV shows the features sharply and well against a BG that though man-made, allows the fox to stand out.
Interesting that it can climb trees to compete with Coaties.
Thanks for sharing this fine and interesting image,
Ivan
