Rainbow-Billed Toucan
(Ramphastos sulfuratus)

This is my ultimate favorite of the approximate 43 species of toucans, they are from the ramphastid family that comprises of Aracaris, Toucans, & Toucanets. My first day in Costa Rica I spotted one of these beautiful birds high in the canopy making its unusual croaking call that sounds very much like a frog.

They are somewhat gregarious and can be found in groups of up to 8 individuals. They are mainly frugivorous, eating mostly fruits, they are opportunistic and will eat arthropods and smaller vertebrae.

These birds are the poster ambassadors of the tropics, if not it's the red-eyed tree frog.

These birds nest in hollowed out tree cavities that were once host to a different species, althought the hole may seem premade they'll have to to do a little customizing to suit there requirements. There they'll lay a clutch of 1-4 eggs that will require exactly 16 days to incubate and another 6 to 8 weeks to be fully weened.

Raibow-Billed Toucans can be found in southern Mexico all the way throughout central America into the northern parts of south America.

Nice picture Paul,
Never saw this one before... Toucans are among my favortie birds too because of their colors and especially after I was able to see some in Brazil and even play with one.
Well done !!!

Nice detail, well exposed on the yellow, that had to have been tough. Nice camera work.
