Hi Vivian,
the butterfly is called "The Owl",
scientific name: Caligo eurilochus.
The underside of wings shows big eye spots resembling the eyes of an owl. Caterpillars feed on leaves of banana.
Regards, Peter

For this critique, my apologies to the Monty Python team ;)

This butterfly is no more. He has ceased to be. He's expired and gone to meet his maker. He's a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed him to the perch he'd be pushing up the daisies! His metabolic processes are now history. He's off the twig. He's kicked the bucket, He's shuffled off his mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! This is an ex-Owl Butterfly.

Sorry, couldn't help myself ;) (but it's true - his head is no longer connected)

Thanks for that - I feel better now :) Nigel.

Very good photo!
But I think that it's a dead one. It has the head out of the boddy, like Merlin noticed.
Pour guy...
Excellent DOF, POV and colours!
