[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The picture shows a large tropical grasshopper with a body length of about 8 cm. Specimens were found in small groups feeding on a beautiful flowering plant, Hymenocallis caribaea, which I will show tomorrow. Leafs of that plant are rather thick. In front of the hopper you can see the feeding signs.
Hymenocallis caribaea grew within the coastal rain forest on the Carribean site of Costa Rica, close to the sea and was not rare. The grasshoppers were observed on some plants only. However, signs of the feeding were visible on many plants. Obviously, the insects avoid to degrade individual plants completely.

The species identity of the grasshopper is not clear. It looks similar to Tropidacris, probably, however, belongs to another genus.
'Artur' (thanks to him) proposed
- Taeniopoda spec.?
This is probably right. However, I did succeed in identifying the species. The few Taeniopoda-species figured do not match.

- Place: Rain forest in the vicinity of Cahuita
- natural light, shadow by trees
- ISO 400
- handheld

Hello Peter,
Brilliant capture of this beautiful grasshopper, well lit and showing great details and I love the wine colour and the pattern of the wings showing up so nicely! Beautiful composition.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Peter!
Vey interesting dark-coloured grasshopper. I especially like the mozaic on its wings.
Good DOF, composition and contrast.
For me the photo is a little to dark in the head part of insect.
Anyway, nice picture!
Regards,
Radomir

Definitely a fine image, Peter.
ISO 400 really seems to work as there is no noise matter whatsoever...
Great depth of field.

Hi Peter

I just love this shot of this strange and ‘unknown to me’ grasshopper with the fancy wings and yellow antennae.

A great composition with the plant running on the diagonal. The colours are stunning and well saturated, the details are amazingly sharp, the BG is sufficiently OOF to compliment the subject, and the exposure was well controlled.

Great work and TFS.

Loot

Cordiales saludos... Ricardo

Exotic species Peter for the colors that presents and the form of the body.
I like the elected framing in combination with the captured point of view, with good sharpness and focus that it also achieves the acceptable diffusion of the bottom.
Personally I believe that for the position of the insect, a smaller DOF has optimized OOF.
Cordial greetings... Ricardo

Hallo Peter,
präzise, gut ausgeleuchtete, sehr körperlich wirkende Darstellung eines verhalten gezeichneten, schön gefärbten, beeindruckend großen und kräftigen Grashüpfers, elegant auf fleischigem Blatt präsentiert.
Mit Dank und besten Grüßen,
Peter
