Face to face with this large tropical grasshopper!
This impressive specimen was found in the tropical lowland rain forest of Costa Rica. Without a flash it is not so easy to obtain suitable pictures because of insufficient light within the forest. Nevertheless, I tried a portrait of this grasshopper resting on a large Hymenocallis leaf. Absence of wind allowed a shutter speed of 1/40 sec and to achieve a suitable result. With f/5.0 depth of field is rather 'narrow'.

The species shown probably belongs to the genus Taeniopoda

- natural light, shadow
- ISO 400
- handheld

hi Peter,
c'est un portrait que l'on ne peut pas manquer, même en vignette. Très bons détails et couleurs denses. Un peu plus de profondeur de champ et c'est encore meilleur.

tfs

Ah Peter, that's a very ugly face, it seems aliens monster!
Great portrait with amazing details, BRAVO!
have a nice week end, ciao Silvio

Hallo Peter,
Peter

That's very impressive for a non-flash macro considering how dark it tends to be in the rainforests. You may be right about depth of field, but the eyes and the mouth draw the attention right away, and one does not really search for detail elsewhere. Very well done. Regards,
Hakan

Hola Peter. Impresionante Macro, Este Saltamantos parece sonreir a tu lente. Felicidades.

Hi Peter.
the pose and POV is great, the hopper looks really angry
and show us the big teeth ;-)
The Dof is maybe a bit shallow but the face is sharp.
Well done.

Hi Peter

What an amazing macro work!
Taking into considerration the condition of lighting in a rain forest and that you didn't use a flash on this one, the result is nothing far from fantastic!
The DOF - although a bit shallow - works alright in concentrating all the attention on the grasshopper's head.
The details and textures are wonderful and very sharp, the natural colors are lovely and the close-up level impressive.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Peter,

Very good macro of this grasshopper remembering me the Tropical Giant Grasshopper (Tropidacris sp). Great details of the face and excellent colors and exposition even within the tropical forest where light is poor...!

Good pic and TFS,

Michel

Hello Peter!
I really do not know how I could overlook this beautiful portrait :) Detaisl are just amazing and the "face" looks fantasctic.
This species has to look interesting from the profile as on this picture the interesting sjape of its thorax is seen.
TFS and best regards,
Radomir

Hello Peter,

What a great macro shot. A bit creeping so in front of me. He is a bit smiling (-: What a fine details. Sharp. Natural colours. Perfect POV, Good BG. Only one remarks from me. It was maybe better that the light came from the front and not from the rightside. You lighted up the hole head. Maybe PP can do something?? Regards and TFS Bob
