[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here another posting of a crab I met in Cuba in the night.
Because in daylight the temperature was too high to take a walk. It was about 20 - 25 cm.
It was walking on the road and we tried and succeed to get it out of the road.
Myselve I am amazed about the kindly and cute face of this crab. So thatīs why I put it on TN.

The Christmas Island red crab (Gecarcoidea natalis) is a species of terrestrial crab endemic to both the Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean. Although restricted to a relatively small area, it is estimated that up to 120 million red crabs may live there, making it the most abundant of the 14 terrestrial crab species on Christmas Island [1]. Christmas Island red crabs eat mostly fallen leaves and flowers, but will occasionally eat other animals, including other red crabs (see cannibalism), if the opportunity arises.

The carapace is up to 116 mm long, rounded, and encloses the gills. The claws are usually of equal size, unless one becomes injured or detached, in which case the limb will regenerate. During that time, it will be the smaller of the two. The male crabs are generally larger than the females, while adult females have a much broader abdomen and usually have smaller claws. The broader abdomen of the female Christmas Island red crab only becomes apparent in the third year of growth. They live in burrows, in order to shelter from the sun. Since they still breathe through gills, the possibility of drying out is a great danger for them.

Christmas Island red crabs are famous for their annual migration to the sea in order to lay their eggs in the ocean. During the migration, the crabs cover the routes to the coast so densely that they can be seen from the air. Volunteers shovel the crabs off the roads and, although no harm is intended, some of the countless millions of crabs inevitably get injured.

a very nice shot and in case you are interested, I think it's Gecarcinus lateralis, a land crab from the family Gecarcinidae (need dorsal view of the carapace to confirm species)

Hallo Vivian,
as I experienced last month in Costa Rica, the land crabs are very shy and it was not easy to come close to them. So, it's nice to see this admirable picture. I think you were very patient and calm to achieve it. Natural colours and good focus.

Wonderful picture of this crab. I do like the pose very much as it is starring at you and watching at the same time. It also looks a little alert. Great sharpness with lots of details in the main subject and very nice colours.

Nice picture. This of course not a Christmas Island red crab (Gecarcoidea natalis), but a Black land crab, Gecarcinus ruricola (Linnaeus, 1758). G. natalis does not occur on Cuba.

wow! Excellent shot! I have never seen such cute face of a crab. The eyes are very well captures, and the reflections in the eyes make the picture wonderful. Good work.
