Jewel Spider (Austracantha minax ) also known as Christmas, Spiny or Crab spider.

This small spider was on a large web which spanned between bushes on a riverbank close to the sea. I took many shots but it proved very difficult, the light wasn’t great and the web was moving in the breeze. Its unfortunate victim is (I think) some type of flying ant.

The spider has six distinctive spines and the upper side of its abdomen is a bright yellow colour. They are very heavy for there small size (the female measures 10-12 mm and male 4-6 mm) and have a tough armoured body and thick legs which gives them a crab-like appearance.
They build a vertical orb web 1-2 metres above the ground between shrubs and sit at the centre from day to night.

Very interesting picture. Good details, great colors and very good POV & DOF. The focus on the frontleg is a little soft. Did the spider move it when you made the photo? TFS!

Wow Andy, Spider exotica! I like this alot. I think I have seen this spider, or something like it, in a book. This is great though, especially with prey. I think it must be difficult to ID these DR species...where are you looking? Very well done.

It is a stuning shot Andy,
That is a fact, the composition is well taken, It is only a shame that you can not see the details very good, but I know you can nat have everything, it is a nice photo with a good pof, very good job.

WOW! Andy this is a fantastic critter and capture. Really colorful. Excellent moment and it shows the prey quite nicely. Very well done on this exceptional post.

Hi Andy
This one really gives me the shivvers, and makes me reach for the can of Doom, or the flyswatter! This spines or nails makes them look like minature triceratops dinosaurs. A nice rendition, good colours and a nice snacking spider picture.

Andy, you did manage to capture a great moment here.

Excellent colors, dof and bg.

Congratulations.

If I woke up and saw this guy sitting an inch away on my pillow staring me down eye to eye, I think I would totally reinvent cardiac arrest. Stellar shot of one ugly &^#$*#(@!
