Hi friends. Today’s posting is a Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris), a species Roger and I saw on many occasions as we travelled through Guatemala and Belize. This one was captured in Tikal National Park. As I’ve said in the past few postings, this place is amazing, the wildlife is abundant and its well worth spending several days here to fully explore the ruins and the exotic wildlife.
Groove-billed Ani are a member of the cuckoo family, though they don’t parasitize other birds nests. Instead Anis live in small groups of 6 to 12 birds and the females lay their eggs in one communal nest, then all the group members take turns incubating the eggs and raising the young.
They are primarily insect eaters and their distribution ranges from southern Texas through all of Central America and into northern South America. They mainly live in savannah, open woodland and the edges of broadleaf rainforests.

Hi Chris,

Superb macro capture of the Groove-billed Ani! Wonderful details with great sharpness and taken from a nice POV. The feathers of the bird are so delicate and have a great multi-colored tinge in them. I like the great comntrast between the dark colored bird and the sorroundings.
Very well seen!

thanks and regards,
Paras Bhalla

Hello Chris,
What a beautiful photo. The sharpness and details are wonderful. Beautiful bright and natural colours, specially in the feathers. Excellent POV, composition and DOF.

Peter

Hi Chris,
good shot, interesting bird and useful note.
thanks

Hi Chris,

Very good picture, this is a difficult bird to photograph, due to its very dark color. You've managed to achieve the necessary adjustments to capture details of plumage and structure of the bird, so surprising.

Here in Venezuela they are called "Orihuelos" and are very abundant.

Good work, thanks for sharing.

Hello Chris,
A superb capture of the Grove-billed Ani, another species that I have photographed in Trinidad before the digital camera age came!
Every aspect about this shot is great to show this species in the best way with high technical quality.
Thanks for sharing this fine reminder of my sight of it 15 years ago!
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi Chris!

Another very interesting and exotic bird from your trip. New specie, I've never seen it before. Very stylish colours, good POV and pose with turned head. BG is slightly crowded, but this is jungle not flat desert :-) Overall very interesting post.
