Captured in Guatemals rain-forest this summer, Tikal area. 20D @ 400mm, handheld.

Light was very hard as always in rain-forests, like to dark in shadows or to light outside. First you see some bird in sunlight and your camera preference's is for this kind of light and then same bird jump in shadow and if you take shot result is 100% black. I always use manual focus and camera preference's and it takes time to change. Most of the objects are far from me and flash can't help so much. Usually is over 30C and more than 80% humidity and camera error is something you need to live with. Mosquitoes are everywhere and every fifth tree is poisonous and you need to be careful what you do. Insect and snakes are bonus :)... Pefrect place for photographer :)

COLLARED ARACARI Pteroglossus torquatus

The Collared Aracari makes its home year-round in the tropical rainforests of southern Mexico and throughout Central America. The most distinctive physical chararcteristic of the Aracari is its amazing beak. Their beaks, about 4 inces long, are almost a quarter of the bird's entire body.

Their bodies are a rainbow of colors, especially their breasts and beaks. On their breasts, Collared Aracaris have yellow, red and green feathers. They also have red or blue plumage surrounding their eyes.

Aracaris are related to the larger Toucans, but are considered Toucanets. The main difference between aracaris and toucans, besides size, is their tail. The Collared Aracari has a much more sharp and pointed tail than the larger Toucans.

Aracaris are highly sociable and usually found in small flocks. They roost communally in tree holes. Young aracaris may be fed by a group of adults instead of just the parents, which is unusual for birds to do.

Hi Ralf,
I know what you mean about the challenges of taking pictures in the rainforest. Every shot in Costa Rica was a challenge.
You did a great job with that aracari.
Great POV showing the ventral markings and the beak.
Sharp details and strong colors.

Exquisite, Ralf!
You have captured this aracari superbly and composed the shot in such a way that the habitat is evident without being dominant.

Tack för denna bild!

Hi Ralf,

Stunning capture, and you can't tell you had a problem with the lighting as it looks perfect, I like the pose with the Aracari looking up, excellent focus and superb colours, I love the birds markings.

I love the composition of this shot, the array of colors, the sharpness of detail, and a chance for me to see an animals that I wouldn't ordinarily see. Kudos to you considering the environment you must endure. Nice contrast and good timing.
