[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Known throughout South America, it is common on the llanos and seems now to be moving graduallyinto Central America. The Lapwing is strikingly marked specieswith a crested hesd, black breast and black flight feathers with contrasting white coverts, making the bird spectacular in flight. Its call toois distinctive: a high-pitched series of raucous repeated notes, heard at night as well as by day. As it is one of the first species to react to danger, it acts as a sentinel for other species as well.
The nest is merely a depression in the ground. As with all plovers, the young move away from the nest soon after hatching, their cryptic coloration making them hard to see on the ground. the food of this species comprises insects and other small arthropods.
