Today another bird from Tobago. I didn't see a lot of nesting birds over there but the yellow-bellied elaenia is an exception. Standing on the balcony of my hotelroom I could observe this interesting bird. It had build her nest in a tree on the beach and was feeding her two youngsters. It's funny to see how one of the young birds is trying to look outside.
The yellow bellied elaenia also known as "Jay" or "Cutterhead" is found in light woodland, suburban gardens and on the edges of forest. The rather dull appearance of its greyish brown upper plumage is relieved by two white wing bars and pale greyish yellow underparts. Most prominent is its crest, which is almost always seen raised.
Elaenias feed on small insects, which may be caught in flight or hunted among foliage; they also take berries. The nest is usually built fairly high in a tree, and is a shallow cup of rootlets, decorated with lichen and often lined with feathers. Two spotted eggs are laid, and most of the parental duties are undertaken by the female parent.
