Your young night heron is nicely portayed, sharp and with good light, despite what you say. I think you are right to doubt the ID.
Black-crowned Night heron juveniles are brownish and don't have such thick bills. Your shot shows a grey young bird and the bill is shorter and thicker than that of the Black-crowned. I suggest it is a Yellow-crowned Night Heron juvenile.
