I visited the La Paz Waterfall Gardens during my recent Costa Rica adventure. I was thrilled to find a colorful mix of birds visiting the various feeding stations. I was happy to nab this Tanager though the light was dull and it's not as sharp as I prefer. Next time I visit I'll plan more than three hours there as the place was a plethora of photographic opportunity.

The Silver-throated Tanager, Tangara icterocephala, is a medium-sized passerine bird. This tanager is a resident breeder in the highlands from Costa Rica to western Ecuador.
It is common from about 600 m to 1700 m altitude in the lower and middle levels of wet mountain forests and adjacent semi-open areas like clearings with shade trees, second growth and woodland edges. In the heavy rains of the wet season, it will descend to sea level.

The compact cup nest is built 1-13 m high in a tree on a branch. The normal clutch is two brown-blotched off-white eggs. This species will raise two broods in a season.

The adult Silver-throated Tanager is 13 cm long and weighs 21g. The male is mainly yellow, with black streaks down its back, and a whitish throat bordered above with a black malar stripe. The wings and tail are black with pale green edgings. The sexes are similar, but adult females have duller and greener-tinged yellow plumage, and sometimes dark mottling on the crown. Immatures are much duller and greener, with dusky wings, tail, back streaks and malar stripe, a grey throat and darker green wing edging.

Silver-throated Tanagers occur in pairs, small groups, or as part of a mixed-species feeding flock. They eat small fruit, usually swallowed whole, insects and spiders.

The Silver-throated Tanager’s call is a distinctive sharp buzzy zzeeep. It does not sing.

Hello Richard,
Excellent capture of a Silver-throated Tanager in a good pose and taken from a fine POV that shows the features. It shows up well against the OOF natural BG and I like the composition on a lichen-covered branch.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

Richard,
I love that golden yellow on this beautiful bird. Beautifully saturated colors. Not as sharp as it can be but little birds are hard to get just right. Everything else is fine. Have yourself a good weekend and happy shooting, springs is almost here, should be a lot of birds out there to catch.

Hallo Richard
Superb display of colour. Excellent camera work and a real feast to the eye. Every little detail is just great. From the fine feathers on the head, right down to the paws clutching onto the branch. It is amazing how perfect the shape and patterns back feathers are, as if each one was painted by hand. This is really outstanding, and I just cannot get over the colours. The green and yellow is a perfect match and really a lovely combination. I like the position you have captured this one from the back, showing the feathers in all its glory. Good focus and framing, presented in a delightful manner. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hello Richard,
What a great capture of this beautiful Tanager that I've never seen although I've seen a few others on T & T some years back.
They're all lovely birds! I like the pose of this one and the details and colours are striking and stand out against the natural background. Very well composed too.

Hello Richard, very nice bird, great pose and composition, the colors are bright and natural. THe background is beautiful, the details are fine even if it seems that the head moved a bit too much for the 1/100th sec. Anyway, great capture! Thanks!

Hi Richard,
Wonderful shot of this cute and colourful Tanager. Lovely colours and details on its plumage, though I think the image lack a bit of sharpness. maybe it was moving about a bit or the difficult lighting did not allow a higher shutter speed. Anyway the image looks majestic and you bring to us a beautiful bird. I like this dense looking natural surrounding too. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Richard,

This is a bird I have never seen. Costa Rica seems to have very exotic looking birds. The colors are beautiful - I love the yellow green and black. I can see how he got his name. You captured him in a lovely pose and pretty setting.

Jane

Hi Richard,
This is a fine and colorful bird! I like this natural exposure and composition. I think that its head could have been a little sharper but I guess it comes from this slow shutter speed you used; maybe that the bird moved a bit. It seems that there was not much lightning that day. Your notes are interesting. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Richard,
Would love to visit Costa Rica, perhaps some day..
Bueatiful bird. You've caught a great pose/POV with good color & details.
