[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The wetlands of Palo Verde National Park are full of colourful waterbirds and dragonflies. Access into the wetland is difficult with only one short boardwalk leading from the park headquarters and a shoreline often the home of sunbaking crocodiles. Nevertheless its an impressive place and easy to see why it’s a listed RAMSAR site of international significance.

This is a Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa), a colourful medium-size waterbird that uses its long toes to walk onto of the dense water hyacinth. They were quite common on the wetlands of Belize and Costa Rica and we also observed them foraging along river banks and even in wet grassy fields.

Northern Jacana is distributed through coastal wetlands from Mexico to northern Panama and on the larger Caribbean islands. It is occasionally found in the southern Gulf states of the US. They feed on aquatic insects and seeds.
