Yesterday I posted a scene from the cloud forests of Santa Elena Reserve and here is one of its inhabitants, the beautiful and shy Slaty-backed Nightingale-thrush (Catharus fuscater). It is a member of the Turdidae family and is found in montane cloud forest between 800 to 2,000m from Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Because they only occur in the dark understorey of the cloud forest fill-flash was unfortunately necessary. Their amazingly bright orange legs and bill really stand out in the gloomy understorey. We only saw this species in the Monteverde area, and the best views were certainly at Santa Elena.

This shot doesn’t quite show off their long orange legs so I put another shot in the workshop that emphasises the legs.

Like many thrush species, these guys spend most of their time hopping along the forest floor searching for invertebrates in the moist leaf litter.

Noise reduction and sharpened in NeatImage.

Hello chris,
An superb capture of of a Nightingale Thrush (In sweden we have a Thrush Nightingale) with fine use of flash in the poor light. The quality including the sharpness is excellent: one wonders whether it would have been even better if you used your SLR?
Thanks for sharing a fine image of what must abe a first for the species on TN!

Hi Chris,
Excellent shot of this Nightingale Thrush and that eye looks amazing and gorgeous. Very impressive sharpness and details on its plumage and the red bill stands out nicely. Good use of flash lighting and I like this natural habitat. Great POV to portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Hola Chirs.
Exelente manejo de flash. Muy agrdables colores de esta especie de Ave. Me gusta el color rojo de su pico y el anillo al derredor de sus ojos.
Saludos Chris.

Hello Chris,
Striking orange legs and bill sure make this species stick out. Wonderful colors and razor sharp details make this a fantastic image to view.
Rick

I had similar thoughts, Chris; it must have been dark in the thick undergrowth of cloud forests and taking the picture of a bird in it would certainly require the use of flash.
You have used it judiciously in this wonderful shot. The entire bird is well lit and its best features -- the eye and the legs -- are very well captured in terms of details and colours.
Thanks for sharing yet another great picture from your trip.
Regards.

Hi Chris
Considering the poor light in this cloud forest you managed to get a very good photo
Well done
Albert

hello Chris

excellent shot of this lovely bird, fine ground level POV,
excellent DOF, great sharpness and details,
and what i love most of your shot is that the bird
is in the underparts of the forest (sous-bois), TFS

Hello Chris,
Excellent capture of this beautiful Thrush. It reminds me a little of a Pitabird skulking in the undergrowth! Good use of the flash, great focus and fine details. Wonderful colours too, the eye is fantastic!
Many thanks, Ulla
