The Hairy Hungarian Pasque Flower,
Vienna, April 2, 2006.

A few days of warm weather after a long and cold winter, and the flowers of spring are out again. An explosion of colours, power, and vitality.

15 to 30 cm in height, the flowers as shown measure approximately 50mm in diameter.

Pulsatilla grandis is one of the showy spring flowers that can sometimes be seen in abundance on dry limestone grassland hills with Pannonian (Hungarian grassland) vegetation to the south and the east of Vienna. The species can be found in uncultivated grassland only. The pretty and surprisingly large flowers with single blossoms are very much dependant of getting lots of light. They dissappear at once if other herbs are taking over after any kind of fertilization.
The flowers appear in March and April. The plant is perennial. The dense hairs on petals and stem are a perfect protection both against cold night time temperatures and dry and windy conditions at daytime. The species is endangered, and severly protected.

The picture was taken on a warm and sunny April 2, 2006, in the hilly grasslands of Perchtoldsdorfer Heide at an elevarion of approximately 350 meters above seal level, a few kilometres south of Vienna.

Very nice spring-time post, sunny and colorful, with a wonderful looking sky for BG. Excellent detail, POV and DOF. I might've cropped out a tiny bit of the FG, and made it more of a landscape composition. Subjective of course :) Very well done.

Excellent spring photo. I can feel the mood of the picture.

What a beautiful contrast between the flowers and the sky, Peter.
This shot is perfect, with the low angle of view and all those clouds.
I do find the highlights in the clouds acceptable in this type of photograph, but what I do in this situation is to clone from the sky, but only at about an opacity of from 3-5%, giving body and texture to the clouds where it's blank. It works very well.
