Eichkogel near Moedling to the south of Vienna is a solitary limestone hill surrounded by vinyards, covered with Pannonian grasslands on its plateau and some of its slopes. That place is abundant with plants and animals that otherwise have become very rare. Early in April this year I found Iris pumila on top of the hill in dense groups in full blossom, most blossoms in purple colours, some of them white and yellow.

“Iris is a genus of between 200-300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers which takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colours found among the many species."

Unlike most other members of its elegant and tall growing family, Iris pumila has specialized on poor soils of dry grassland locations on rocks and sands, stays close to the ground and grows just 10 to 15 cm in height. Endemic to south eastern Europe, it grows in the wild at a few locations with Pannonian climate of dry and hot summers to the south and the east of Vienna.

P.S.: This year’s early and unusually dry and sunny weather has intensely speeded up the development of vegetation in Central Europe. Many spring flowers like the dwarf iris have faded away within a few days. In the lowlands the soil is as dry as in late summer, and even many herbs growing in the shadow of trees start looking parched. While the North American east coast is suffering from cold and rain, ice and snow, we are faced with summer temperatures and drought since weeks, and no end of that most unusual weather for the time of the year in sight. We are hoping for rain to come soon.

Goodness, Peter, this picture is so real it gives the impression I am seeing these flowers with my own eyes!
A simple but extremely beautiful composition with those lovely Iris flowers.

Nice shot Peter showing the landscape with the flowers as subject is a difficult shot to do but did well with this maybe a little too many stalks lower down tfs rgds Necip.

Superb composition with an excellent low point of view allowing us to see the area this beautiful flower is growing in which is only possible due to the great depth of field. Your colors and details are wonderful with the back lighting, excellent job Peter.

Hallo Peter,
Dein schön gestaltetes Bild, mit den kleinen Iris im Vordergrund auf einem Hügel , den Blick auf die dahinter gelegenen Ebene führend,ist sehr anspruchsvoll.Schönes Licht auf den Blumen.
Auch hier ist die Vegetation sehr fortgeschritten, viele Schmetterlinge auch. Bin mir aber nicht sicher, dass dies nur Gutes verspricht.

As far i know, this color is very difficult to reproduce in my D50 without tweaking the white balance, you have done very well to get this natural colors. The POV which depicts where this grows is superb!

I like the vivid colour got on the iris and the subtle texture seen on it.

Posted on April 22nd eh! Well perhaps a good occassion to commemorate:

I guess Herr Himmler wanted nothing to do with Canadians???

Anyway, beautiful colours in these dwarf irises, esp. with the light shining thru... Symbolic of the event I cited. Fresh flowers over a valley that is still in the fog. And iris, i.e. "rainbow", a symbol of eternal hope. Tfs, Jay
