Muscari à toupets - Schopfhyazinthe.

Muscari comosum (L.) P. Miller

Schopfige Traubenhyazinthe
Tassel Grape Hyacinth
Muscari à toupets

Conspicuous perennial plant to be seen in late Spring near the vineyards around Vienna. Southern and Southern Central Europe, dry unfertilized grasslands, edges of forests. A rare plant in Central Europe, but locally abundant where it exists.

Stem with blossoms grows up to 70cm - sometimes even 100cm - in May and June.

The plant is strictly protected in Austria.

Interesting to note that bumble bees visiting these flowers are always staying with the less conspicuous small greenish blossoms towards the ground. These blossoms that are looking unripe are the fertile ones. The large violet blossoms on top are sterile – their only job seems to be to send a strong optical signal of attraction.

For another view of this flower, taken earlier this year in Spain by our TN friend José Rodriguez, please see: http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Europe/Spain/photo52118.htm

en voilà une bien belle fleur. Une couleur très vive qui se détache bien du reste. Très joli, merci.

Hi Peter,
Now it's Austria turn! This Muscari looks fine; color, texture and sharpness are excelent and the broad DOF let see the landscape too without disturbs the main flower: two photos in one ! A lovely shot.
TFS, José M.

Very impressive glance to flower shot Peter! I like this different style! So cloose to flower and we can see the great landscape as a bg! If the sky was clear blue, it could be better. But still it's a great shot and new look to flower macros! Thank you and best regards!

Hi Peter
What a lovely dainty little lily you have captured here. Those violet and blue colours are absolutely stunning. The notes, especially the portion about the bees and the green blossoms are very interesting information. Who would have thought that? Isn't nature just full of such intriguing jewels?
You have done great work with this composition and POV, showing the flower with ample space to see a hint of the surrounding environment. Great colours (as mentioned), fabulous details, complimenting BG, and excellent exposure.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Peter: Grape Hyacynth - I planted some in my yard, and they faithfully come back and spread year after year. This is a very nice macro, well composed against the backdrop. I love your butterflies also, as all your pictures are so exquisite!
