Chalkhill Blue

Modraszek korydon
Modráčik vikový
Modrásek vikvicový

Family: Lycaenidae.

Wingspan: 32 - 37mm.

With its bright silver white wings, this pretty male Blues seems to merge with its surroundings of shiningly white bare limestone rocks on a sunny day in midsummer.

The species is distributed from central and northern Spain, France, the English south coast through central Europe, northern Italy, to the Balkan and Ukraine. Missing in Portugal, southern Italy, northwestern Germany, Denmark, Scandinavia.

The butterflies can be found in warm locations above limestone and chalkhills from the lowlands up to 2000 meters in the mountains.

Caterpillars feed on various Leguminosae (Coronilla varia L., Hipocrepis comosa L., etc.).

The plant:

Buphthalmum salicifolium L.,
Ochsenauge.

Asteraceae, growing above limestone in the Alpine range from the low valleys up to 2000m. In blossom from June to August, blossoms 3-6cm in diameter, heigth 20-60cm.

The location:

A river gorge cut deep into the very rough and extended limestone wilderness of "Ötschergräben" in southwestern Lower Austria, at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level. The area is inhabited by a number of otherwise rare species of plants and animals, bears included. I do prefer to meet butterflies there.

Hallo Peter,

Super!
Peter

Hallo Peter,

Saludos... Ricardo

Different although interesting POV to see this pleasant composition Peter.
Good definition with an appropriate handling of the intense light.
DOF and the bottom benefit the best vision in the insect and the flower.
Greetings... Ricardo

Hi Peter

Beautiful shot of the Chalkhill Blue, I love the POV where the B/Fly has settled on the upright flower, lovely sharp detail and excellent colours too, the BG is very nice.

On a morning news programme in the UK they were discussing these Butterflys and due to our hot summer the numbers have increased in the UK 5 fold this year after several years of decline.

Hello Peter.
Excellent macro shot. It's one of my favourite Lycaenidae. I've had a luck to see this species last year. Unfortunately I don't have so good pictures of it like you ;-D

Chris

Bonjour Peter, what a splendid macro-shot!! Lighting is perfect and the POV too. Great composition and a lot of details. In my favorit list, best regards, Didier.

stunning shot - with that grey mottled background and a similarly colour butterfly on a bright yellow flower.

i love the detail trhat is visible and the fact that you can see both the upper and the lower sides of the wings and that everything is in focus and sharp.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter.
The collection of your butterflies is surprising. In occasion of each of them it is possible to write the whole poem.

This one to like me exclusively interesting and expressive point of view, pose of butterfly, direction of light and impressive BG and its delicate, refined colour palette.

Excellent and beautiful work. TFS and my best regards,
Alexei.
