Meleageria coridon (Poda, 1761),
male.

Chalkhill Blue
Silbergrüner Bläuling
Blaak blauwtje
Solvblafugl
Argus bleu nacré
Nina coridon
Modraszek korydon
Modráčik vikový
Modrásek vikvicový

Family: Lycaenidae.

Wingspan: 32 - 37mm.

The species is distributed from central and northern Spain, France, the English south coast through central Europe, northern Italy, to the Balkan and Ukraine. Missing in Portugal, southern Italy, northwestern Germany, Denmark, Scandinavia.

The butterflies need warm locations above limestone and chalkhills from the lowlands up to 2000 meters in the mountains. From the UK, the species is reported by Hilary Wilkinson (hil) to have increased 5fold this year after several years of decline, probably due to the hot summer. Thank you, Hilary.

Caterpillars feed on various Leguminosae (Coronilla varia L., Hipocrepis comosa L., etc.).

The underside of wings has been presented in my previous posting:
http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Europe/Austria/photo66168.htm

The plant:

Tetragonolobus maritimus L.,
Dragon's Teeth, Spargelbohne, Gelbe Spargelerbse.
Family: Fabaceae.

To be found in June and July on wet spots above limestone in southern central Europe, rather rare. Blossoms measuring 2-3cm in length. Plant grows to 5-25cm in heigth.

The location:

A river gorge cut deep into the very rough and extended limestone wilderness of "Ötschergräben" in southwestern Lower Austria, at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level.

The camera:

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 16mm, F/4, 1/640 sec., ISO-125; no tripod, no flash; 23.07.2006, 09:28.

Slowly approaching the shy little butterfly, that first shot was taken from quite a distance. Therefore the image has been very closely cropped - a square of just 1144 x 1144 pixels cut out of the original 3072 x 2304 pixels.

Postwork: Photoshop Elements, cropped at the sides, centre parts slightly sharpened, BG slightly softened and cleaned, downsized to the web.

Hope you enjoy. Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Guten Morgen Peter,
Heinz

Hi Peter,
The needed complement to the first post. So complemenary that even it shows the background. High end quality standards as usually.
Best regards, José M.

Indeed a super-picture of a perfectly fresh specimen. Excellent work and, yes, we are on the same tracks across Europe!

Bien hecho.
Cordiales Saludos... Ricardo

A non habitual POV, but that in this opportunity it is very effective when showing the beauty of the "coat" of this butterfly Peter.
Very good clarity with an appropriate illumination, although personally I has opted for an exhibition something smaller.
A frame capable and wide for not pressing the image of the insect.
Well done.
Cordial Greetings... Ricardo

Hi Peter

Beautiful shot of the Chalkhill Blue, the POV is excellent and the detail is superb. The Yellow flower and Green BG really compilment the Blue B/Fly nicely.

It is a Butterfly that I have not seen as I live in northern England so its nice to see them on this site, Thanks

Hallo Peter,
na da hab ich ja noch so eine Schoenheit verpasst. Das Bild ist wirklich Spitze. Die Perspektive und die Bildgestaltung gefallen mir ausserordentlich.
Gruss..Sky

Peter, my friend, I am running out of superlatives to describe your work. To train a beautyful furry blue butterfly to sit on the perfect yellow flower in just the right pose is a Dr. Doolittle feat! I swear you must talk to them!
Cheers
Otto

brilliant yellow and blue.
Excellent POV.
Symetrical Butterflies are boring. View from the side is difficult to do well. You managed perfectly: it is all sharp and the eye is still there. Background is defocused enough.
