Autumn Spring.

Dog Rose,
Heckenrose.

Species: Rosa canina L.
Genus: Rosa
Family: Rosaceae
Order: Rosales
Class: Magnoliopsida
Division: Magnoliophyta

The Dog Rose in blossom means Springtime in Austria.
The common and pretty plant is in full blossom in May, and by the end of June, when summer starts to get hot, the time of its pretty blossoms is over.

The red fruit of the Dog Rose, the Briar hip - in Austria we call it "Hagebutte" or "Hetscherl", ripens over the summer and gets crimson red when autumn arrives.

This year, after a rather cool and wet August, the whole month of September has been very pleasantly warm and stable around Vienna - maybe the reason that for the first time in my life I could see dog rose blossoms and hips at the same time on a bush, and not a single blossom on a single plant, but many blossoms on many plants between the red fruits on the hills overlooking the ancient town of Retz some 50 kilometres north of Vienna.

While many people around me call Autumn a sad time, I do not agree any longer. I am going to like these pleasantly calm days when we start to seek the bright sunshine again. These days are full of promises of next Springtime to come. Sometimes as explicit as shown by the Dog Roses of Retz on a beautiful saturday evening against a clear blue sky before sunset.

For another view of the setting, please look into

>>> landscape included.

" The Dog Rose (Rosa canina) is a variable scrambling rose species native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia. It normally ranges in height from 1-5 m, though sometimes it can scramble into the crowns of even taller trees. Its stems are covered with small sharp spines, which aid it in climbing. The flowers are usually pale pink, but can vary between a deep pink and white. They are 4-6 cm diameter with five petals, and mature into an oval 1.5-2 cm red-orange fruit, or hip. The plant is high in certain antioxidants. The fruit is noted for its high vitamin C level and is used to make syrup, tea and marmalade."

One of my favourite flowers. Usually it has also a wonderful fragrance, too!. Nicely captured and technically perfect !

Hi Peter,
Unusual to see a flower and a fruit in a Rosa canina at the same time! Happe shot with vivid colors, excellent composition, a blue sky that works fine as background and an eye-catching image.
Workshop is as good as original and landscape works equally well if not better than sky, IMHO.
I hope that this strange later flower that not means that Nature is loosing control.

Ricardo

Aha... so copying the style of my welcome the spring!.
Two beautiful images, showing different POV of this nice rose.
In the original image, the previous rosebud appears slightly outside of focus, while the later one and the flower with very good focus.
The blue of the sky is something clear, impeding to visualize some details.
In the second picture I love the center of the flower in all their splendor.
Question... why did you choose F4 for this focus?
I dared to realize a Workshop, modifying slightly the color of the sky and applying a Unsharp mask.
I hope you like it.
My best regards... Ricardo

Hallo Peter,
das hast Du ja einen "Spätzünder" erwischt. Insgesamt gefällt mir Deine Komposition sehr gut. Sehr gute Schärfe, Blickwinkel und natürliche Farben. Schade, daß Du den Geruch dieser Wildrose nicht über das Netz senden kannst. Danke für dieses sehr schöne Foto.
Gruß
Heinz

Great picture and interesting note! This must be a rare occurence? Perefect in every way!
Cheers
Otto

Beautiful picture! I love the POV, the colors everything. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Peter!
Very interesting shot of what is a rather uncommon view. A fresh beautiful flower springing to life next to mature fruit. Nice contrast of all the colors creating this pleasant compositon. Congratulations,
Mark

Hallo Peter,
Anne

What's happening to our climate?? Exactly the same thing is happening up here in the North. Everything is in flower as if it was the end of August!! Only this week are we beginning to feel that autumn is here although it is still very warm, +17 degrees! Rosa rugosa is in flower here and the scent is marvellous!
Anyway, your shot is lovely and so sharp against the blue sky. Makes me feel quite sentimental!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hallo Peter !
Vielen Dank !
Valerie.

Hi Peter!
This wild rose in a slightly different form grows in the sub Himalayan valleys in Pakistan, India and Nepal too. I have personally seen it in May/June during my treks to the mountains. It gives a nice heady fragrance. When I was a little boy living in my village in the hills, we used to give those tempting looking red hips a try during autumn and repent later when the thorny stuff in them stuck to the palate. The damn thing was tasty alright!
A beautiful image against the background of a blue sky.
Thanks for sharing this beauty.
Regards.
Ram

Hi Peter.
Brilliant shot as usual, Peter. Great set of captured subjects. And one is more beautiful than another. I amazed by pink-white colours of the flower, clear blue sky and rich coloured red fruits. Details of all subjects (including leafs) are great and expressive. Their arrangement on the shot space is nice and impressive. Composition of your picture is skilful. Perfect esthetic work. Bravo.
Alexei.
