Erebia aethiops.

Small to medium sized butterflies, most of them of dark colours, and most of them with little eye spots on their wings are dominant in number of different species in the mountain regions of Europe during the summer months. At least 138 different species of Satyrinae have been reported from the region of Europe and Northwest Africa, some 46 of them belonging to genus Erebia (Ringlets) which are of very similar appearance and sometimes hard to keep apart in identification.

In European mountain forests, ringlets are dominant butterflies. Quite often we may see many, many of them on small patches of meadows in the forests.

Erebia aethiops is reported from the lowlands up to 2000 meters in the mountains, very local in Scotland and Northwest England, from the Massif Central, the Cevennes, from Belgium through Germany and Poland to Lithuania, Switzerland, Austria, Balkan, Rhodopes in Northern Greece, Apennines, Asia Minor, Urals, Caucasus, Sajan. Not reported from northern Germany nor Scandinavia. It can be found in forest meadows and moreland.

Butterflies are on their wings in one extended generation from the end of July to September. Caterpillars feed on various species of grass (Molinia ceaerulea, Carex sempervirens, Bromus erectus, Festuca ovina, Poa trivialis, etc.).

The dark colour of wings seems to be a perfect adaptation for collecting the rays of sun for warming up. The eye spots seem to be a successful instrument of mimicry in order to keep off predators like lizards and birds while sitting on stones for warming up.

The location:

Location: Dry, scrubby oak and pine forest at the edge of the pannonian lowlands to the south of Vienna, near Winzendorf, Lower Austria, at an elevation of 350 meters, under bad light conditions in the shadow of trees.

Hello Peter,
Those of us who try to avoid square compositions have to realise that sometimes there is no alternative, such as this fine shot.
This is an excellent capture with the three Woodland Ringlets having different POV's of each individual, all three being pretty sharp, as well as the umbelliferous flowers they are on and they contrast well with the blurry but recognisable Bg.
Nice to see the sex scale diffusion on the male on the right.
Lovely contribution!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Peter.
Next amazing butterfly scene (stage). Only Nature can create such beautiful view. And you should be happy to have opportunity to picture it. I like the great DOF dispute the large aperture value. All butterflies and flowers are in focus. BG is separated from main subject excellently. I also like the combination of the white flowers and dark insects, which are surrounded by flowers. As always for you excellent details and great composition. Perfect done and TFS. My best wishes, dear Peter,
Alexei.

Hello Peter,
I'm amazed that you've managed to keep this wonderful summer view away from us for so long!
Perhaps you've saved it on purpose to cheer us all up in the cold winter? It certainly feels just like a vitamin injection!
Beautiful composition showing all three Ringlets sharply in focus and I like the contrasting white flowers and light green in the background. A master piece!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hello Peter!
This time only few words, I will add some other in the evening.
This is a very nice composition! :)

Hi Peter,
Probably one of the best butterflies photos possible! This three bfs in different poses over the right flower and the soften colours make a wonderful image. Congratulation!

Hi Peter,
A lovely "bouquet" of butterflies and well done in capturing them together.Their composition with the white flowers is very attractive and they seem to float on the blurred BG.Must have been difficult to get them all clear but you seem to have done a pretty good job.

Hallo Peter,
das ist eine schöne kleine Kollektion von
- Erebia aethiops

What a fantastic congregation of these three beauties, Peter!
What is more, all the three are very well captured with superb sharpness, focus and colours.
The image is a rich treat for the eyes.
Thanks and best regards,
Ram

Hi Peter,
When I opened it, thought for myself: It has to be only from Peter!
A truly remarkable shot.
You made a so lovely composition, with that tiny flowers and the 3 different poses of the butterflies.
Magnificent the use of DOF to put in the same plane the insect to get them focused.
No more than congratulations, thanks for share it with us and my best regards,
JM

Once again your posting shows your talent off very well. The composition, depth of field, details and colors are all amazing. Thanks for sharing.

This is lovely Peter. I don't know how you managed to get the DOF correct for all the flowers and butterflies. It is very well done.

Thanks for sharing

Hallo Peter,
Anne

Hi Peter

What a capture!!! 3 on 1...there had to be something special on that flower! ;)
This is a splendi shot that manages to present the very nice details and colors of the Scotch Argus from 3 different POVs at the same time!
The DOF is most cerainly the key ellement and it's impeccably managed - so it can focus on all of the 3 butterflies.
The colors are lovley and the light is very nice, completing this amazing composition.

Bravo and TFS

Ricardo

Truly beautiful composition Peter with the three butterflies nicely captured, with a scarce DOF but that it embraces to the same ones with great general focus.
I like the point of view to show all the samples with good posterior out of focus.
Perhaps the weak point is the illumination, so difficult in these cases where the white flowers would come out totally over exposed using the assistance of flash.
My best regards... Ricardo

Hello Peter,
This is such a charming composition with the three Erebian elves happily dancing 'round in their Elysian field after having just emerged from the grips of Erebos to whom they are destined soon to return. Thank you very much for this lovely reminiscence of what awaits us out there to gladden our minds again.
With best regards,
Goran

P.S. The Swedish name is something of a curiosity in European Butterflies.

Hi Peter

An exquisite capture of these beautiful butterflies. What a bonus you received by getting 3 of these insects posing on the same plant. The little white flowers almost look suspended in mid air.

The BG is well removed from the subjects creating an amazing 3D effect in this lovely composition. Great colours, sharp details, and spot-on exposure all adds up to a very pleasing shot.

Well done and TFS.

Loot

Hello Peter,
This image is very impressive. It is a delight to see three of this beautiful specie at the same time in all different poses. Details, exposure POV, composition and DOF are just beautiful and so well done. This is a master's piece, congratulations!

Ah! Now this one we DO have - but I need to travel along way to find it. They seem to be very local in scotland, and in some open woodland they are very numerous (on the rare occasions when the sun shines) and in others they are absent. A very attractive, "natural" image that reminds me of summers in cool woodlands - thank you. Nigel.

Hello Peter.

Excellent picture, nice composition and colors.

Regards.
Jose Luis.

Hi Peter
I have been going through your gallery and I am just amazed at the array of wonderful shots. I think they are all great but this one is my favorite-to get this composition and detail is very impressive, particularly the white flower exposure. I have just started taking butterflies and I have a long way to go!

Successful capture.
Tell me how you managed to make clear the two butterflies that are far and that is very close to another unclear.
