Cheerfully returned from a little hiking trip through the Pannonian grasslands south of Vienna on that cool but very sunny Sunday, March 11, 2007. Signs of early spring to be found everywhere around.

Pulsatilla grandis is a surprisingly large and conspicuous spring flower that can be seen in abundance these days on dry limestone grassland hills with Pannonian (Hungarian grassland) vegetation to the south and the east of Vienna. It may be found in uncultivated grassland only. The plants with single blossoms that may be found growing in large groups are very much dependant on getting lots of light. They disappear at once when other herbs are taking over after any kind of fertilization.

The plant grows 15 to 30 cm in height, the flowers as shown here measure approximately 5 - 7 cm in diameter.

The plant is perennial. Blossoms can be seen in March and April. Dense hairs on petals and stem are a perfect protection both against cold night time temperatures and dry and windy conditions at daytime. Along with its habitat the species is endangered, and strictly protected.

Similar species are reported from the North American prairies. In Manitoba, the prairie crocus (Pulsatilla ludoviciana), because of its hairy petals also called the "gosling plant", has been chosen for the state's flower. (Thank you, Jay).

Hello Peter,
Fine way to announce the arrival of spring!
This Pasque flower is sharp and the DOF good, even to allow a view of the horizon in the BG. How nice to see it against a blue sky!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

HI Peter,
it's great to see a spring flower. The colours are lovely.
I like the low POV and the DOF the flower is well seen against the blue sky. The details is also very good, the hair around the flower is well seen.
Great work, my friednd.

Hallo Peter,
Danke Dir mein Freund.

Hi, dear Peter.
Next your fantastic of beautifulness and reproduction quality picture. The pictured flower is simply wonderful as well as the combined (green-grey and blue) BG. Lowest POV and DOF are perfect at highest range. The lighting, fluffy petals and stem, their reproduction is really outstanding. BRAVO, my friend. Once more piece of true art. My congratulations and TFS.

Hello Peter,
it's pulsatilla time, but there's nothing wrong about that. They're beautiful flowers and so is your picture. It might have been nice to show a little bit more of the surroundings. Moreoften they can be found on beautiful places.
Compliments, Jacob

Hi Peter,
This is really enjoyabe!
I like so much the beauty and kind light there and the way you handled it with the exposure.
The transparencies got in the petals are so good ones.
I really like yours almost square pictures, so larges, with no frames, all and pure high quality arrangment of pixels for the pleasure to look at.
My compliments and thanks for share it.

Hi Peter

Another beautiful macro work from you, my friend!
I'm sure you enjoyed going out on such a lovely day as today, especially if you found such charming things to photograph.
Nice to see you've found them again after last year, too :)
The sharpness and definition here is outstanding and the colors are just fantastic.
Also the DOF is superb - keeping absolutely everything important in full focus - and the low-angled POV works terrific!
A splendid presentation!

Hi Peter

We call this flower 'Danes Blood' as it is supposed to flower where viking battles took place - the other name is Pasque flower as it flowers around Easter Time (pasque - Passion).

Lovely shot with great sharpness and lovely colours.

Hello Peter,

Excellent macro of this flower! I like the fact that you go down enough to include the great and nice blue sky in the picture!

Colors look very natural and the focus is right on!

I'm so happy too that spring is coming!!!

TFS,

Michel

Wondewrful light, beautiful colors and exceptional detail, as usual! Early spring, while its warm, has yet to arrive in my corner of the world. My mother told me of blooming trees in her yard in Vienna just now, so I am envious!
They grow around here in my yard too, but none are up yet!
Cheers
Otto

From this source:

The floral emblem of Manitoba was officially adopted when an act respecting its adoption was given Royal Assent on March 16, 1906. Accordingly, "The flower known botanically as the anemone patens, and popularly called the 'crocus', shall be adopted as and deemed to be the floral emblem of the province." This early spring flower is known as the floral emblem of the province.

I know this one , or its NA cousin as Prairie Crocus, windflowers, or pasque-flowers < Oster-Blumen > ... sometimes even known as the gosling plant.
Voila a few more names for your list { or add as anemone patens (Pulsatilla ludoviciana) }

Some spectacular colours etc. And a real harbinger of Spring!

Tfs this beauty, Jay

Hi Peter

Ha-ha-ha, another photographer grovelling in the dirt while plunging to an abnormal low in order to attain that ultimate POV. Ok, so it worked and the result shows that you can never descend or sink too low in the name of art (chuckle).

A wonderful capture of this gorgeous 'grand' anemone. I love the POV and the simplistic composition showing the meadow, the sky, and the augmented flower. Pure unadulterated beauty attracts absolutely and relentlessly arrests the attention in total surrender. The colours are great (my wife goes ballistic over purple – you should see my kitchen). It pleases the eyes and it warms the senses in anticipation of the imminent burst of splendour and growth as announced by the signs of the approaching season of spring. Intricate and well defined details and superb exposure management completes an alltogether splendid posting.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hallo Peter
Pleased to meet you. Going through the web pages on Trek Nature is a new adventure every time, and I can understand why it is so difficult to get away from the PC. There are just so many talented photographers on the site and they all have such spectacular portfolios. I have seen some of your beautiful photos before but never had the opportunity to give my own comments. In my search looking at all the beautiful photos I have missed before, I came across this breathtaking "Pulsatilla grandis" and it definitely deserves two smiley's. One smiley because I just love the colour purple and the second one because the details of this flower is so perfect and razor sharp with nothing out of place. I just love the fine hair and the soft colours of the flower. This was truly a tremendous delight to look at, and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
