Paradisea liliastrum.

Mountain meadows in Carinthia, Austria. Dedicated with my best wishes and congratulations to our dear Swiss alpine TN-photographer Anne Gattlen (anel) and her husband who are celebrating their 20th anniversary of being together today.

Since medieval times, Carinthian peasants of the Lesachtal valley have been cutting and drying grass and spicy herbs of mountain meadows to have enough food for their cattle during the long winters. A hard job to get up there from valley bottom elevations through steep and dense forests with all the equipment for cutting the grass, and an equally strenuous and dangerous job to get the hay down on sledges in winter.

Those precious grasslands above the range of forests were gradually expanded by means of clearing the woods from an elevation of 2000m down to 1500m above sea level, allowing a very rich and versatile vegetation to spread and to thrive.

With more than 500 species of plants, 100 species of spiders, 670 species of butterflies and moths reported from that location - a few of them just lately discovered and newly decribed from there, the mountain meadows of Mussen are a uniquely rich and very vulnerable habitat that definitely is depending on human action and cultivation to be maintained.

When in the late 1970s it was no longer economically feasible to cut the grass and harvest the hay, these mountain meadows were given up by the farmers, and woodland started to cover the area again. In 1978, the place called Mussen, being particularly rich in rare and unusual plants, was declared one of Carinthia's first nature protection areas, and from government funds, farmers are now getting paid good money to go on with cutting the grass of their meadows every two years to keep the forest from invading and destroying the ecologically tremendously rich meadows.

Protection of nature does not always mean to let things go, but to actively preserve certain habitats to keep their rich biodiversity.

Paradisea liliastrum (L.) Bertol., Syn.: Hemerocallis liliastrum (L.) is a rare and conspicuous perennial plant with large white blossoms, that grows 30 to 50cm high on a few mountain meadow locations in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Spain.

Mussen meadows are still a rather secret place. It takes a long but pleasant walk from the little village of Sankt Jakob im Lesachtal to get there. In early summer in particular, you will be entering a paradise of flowers and butterflies - but you may end up getting into one of those frequent thunderstorms that region is also famous for.

So... This is your secret place Peter! I'm so glad that it is still secret as it really looks like a little hidden paradise. What an amazing POV! When I had a look at the gallery, this picture jumped in my face :) Wow! This composition, exposure and DOF are superb and so are colors, saturation and your so interesting notes. My only question is: did you use noise reduction in some parts? This is another high quality post from you, congrats!

Hello Peter,
All three views are beautiful. I especially like the close-up of the Paradise Lily.
The main photo is interesting because of the nice low POV and the slope of the hills. It also nice to see the lily in a prominent place in the foreground. This looks like a beautiful place in the spring with all the colorful wildflowers. Very nice focus and exposure. Great note.

Hallo Peter,
Paradiesische Aussicht auf diese Naturwiesen und wunderschönes Panorama auf Deiner Workshopdarstellung. Jetzt weiss ich, wo Du in Kärnten warst. Sehr interessant konstruiertes Bild mit dem Akkzent auf die Paradieslilie und den anderen Wiesenblumen im Vordergrund. Der Blick kann dann frei über den Hügel bis zum wolkenbeladenen Himmel schweifen. Heute genau vor 20 Jahren habe ich geheiratet. Die Kapelle schmückten wir mit Wiesenblumen, die Paradieslilie war unter ihnen.

Wonderful shot of an alpine meadow taken from an inspiring POV and supplemented by an excellent note describing how our biological diversity is disappearing because we no longer farm our lands like our fathers did. Even the management of the few nature reserves that are left is threatened because of other economical priorities.
So it is great that you posted this. Also a suitable token to congratulate Anne on her wedding anniversary. She is a fine naturalist and photographer.

A wonderful landscpae!
I like so much your upwards POV that let us see the confluence of this two hills, and with that blue sky and clouds formations at the back.
So good the composition made with all that flowers sparked all around, it adds color accents to the whole image.
Love the foreclose flower, with its white that stands out from the image.
A great image to dedicate!

This is such a wonderful view of an alpine meadow and the lily in all three shots is very beautiful. WHat a relief to hear that hay-making will continue in order to preserve the lovely meadows of Kärnten. This is a clever capture; I like the very low POV, the flowers in sharp focus and the sloping hills beyond. Lovely composition!

What a lovely composition, with an excellent POV. It certainly reminds me of Austria. Great light, lovely colours and all nice and sharp. An interesting collection of flora with a great note.

I would love to walk through a field with flowers as beautiful as these ones on your photograph. I think I'll forget about the time, I'll stop at each one and admire the beauty, and if they have a fragrance I'll like to smell them. I am also sure that in between I'll find different kinds of insects or butterflies and all other lovely kinds of grasses, weeds and hidden treasures of interest. This is really a beautiful display of nature. Thanks for sharing.
