The Spotted Sable Moth.

Anania funebris (Ström, 1768)

Spotted Sable Moth
Vijačka osemškvrnná
Zavíječ osmitečný
Valolaikkukoisa

Family: Pyralidae, Pyraustinae, Pyraustini.

Wingspan: 19 – 24 mm

“A highly distinctive day-flying species, occurring locally in scattered locations throughout the British Isles, with a preference for limestone districts. The adults are on the wing from late May to July, and have a peculiar spinning motion when in flight. The larva feeds in a slight web, on the leaves and flowers of goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) and occasionally dyer's greenweed (Genista tinctoria).” http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=1381

I have never seen this very conspicuous little moth before, but this year I met it twice on very different locations: early in June in the Pannonian lowlands to the south of Vienna, and again in mid June high up on an arid sunny mountain meadow at an elevation of 1650 meters above sea level in Carinthia, at a place called “Auf der Mussen”.

Wide spread, but local from the UK through Europe, Siberia to North America. May to July.

Foodplants: Solidago, Genista tinctoria.

Hi Peter
An excellent capture of this lovely moth, but I just hope you told it that it won't find anything sweet in that item it was sitting on. However, it looks like it was sucking something as its galea was extended all the way into this turd, yuck.
Your composition is great and the colours are splendid. The details are nice and sharp and the exposure was perfect. As Emma said, there is no OE on the whites and no UE on the darker areas.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Peter,
A stunning capture of this beautiful moth.
The colors are so striking and distinctive.
Perfect POV and super sharp details with perfect exposure.
Well done and TFS. : )

Nice species but i think the focus is more on the pile of dirt rather than the moth.

hi Peter,

WOW, very nice capture,
just back from the field and with couple of photo of this species (and just wondering what is it... you saved a lot of my time with this)... but my photo is not even close (the butterflies have partially broken wings on the right part).

TFS,
cosmln

Hi Peter.
This is a very nice picture despite of soft colors. It's well composed, colours are clean and transparent. DOF, details and sharpness are excellent. TFS.
