The Shepherd's Fritillary.

Boloria pales (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)

Hochalpen-Perlmutterfalter
Shepherd's Fritillary
Perlada alpina

Wingspan: 32 - 36 mm.

A tiny mountain fritillary from the Pyrenees, the Alps, Gran sasso, the Carpatian chain and the Tatra, to be found on alpine meadows above the forests from 1600m to more than 3000m above sea level, in one generation in July and August.

Another species, Boloria napaea (Hoffmannsegg 1804), is very similar.

Caterpillars feed on Viola.

The location:

The picture was taken at an elevation of 2000 meters on the way back from Monte Peralba, Carnia, down to Lesachtal, Carinthia, in the afternoon of August 18, 2005. That trip included some climbing, therefore I had to restrict my equipment to a pocket camera.

Getting up high into the mountains to take pictures from species that can’t be met in the garden next door sometimes requires a compromise on equipment. This picture is showing that compromise.

This picture was taken with one of those small digital cameras you can carry with you in the pocket of your trousers. A good thing when you need both hands free for some climbing and have to avoid a camera dangling at your side or from your neck. Due to the very short focal length even some low cost compact digital cameras show quite a good DOF. That can be good for the details of the object you want to show, but bad for setting off the object from the BG, as you can see here.

The camera:

Nikon E4600E, 2288 x 1712 pixels. sRGB, 17mm, f / 4.9, 1/36sec., ISO-50, 18.08.2005, 16:55.

Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Nice photo of the butterfly. Very good composition, details and colors.

Nice shot!
The DOF do not allow a good sharp of the insect, but still a good photo!
Good BG and POV!
TFS Cris

Hi Peter,
The composition and framing on this is perfect. Quality of light was beautiful, and the colors are well saturated. Detail may not equal that of a high end camera and macro lens, but for a small point and shoot it is outstanding. Credit all goes to the photographer!

Hi Peter
Starting with your useful notes and ending to your excellent shots.
I love this small beautifull butterfly and I want to tell that in my country we have other colors such as blue and yellow.
TFS

Hi Peter,
The detail is clear.
The color and composition are nice too.
I like this photo.
Thanks for share.

Privet Peter.
And here the nature has not stinted. On such small - it is so much many paints. Beautiful combinations of colors have turned out.

Hallo Peter,

Hello Peter,
This is a very good capture.
Nice detail, good colours and a very good POV.
At first I thought it may benefit from a tighter crop but I like it this way.
Excellent note too.

Have a good weekend.

Hello Peter,

Beautiful capture of this wee butterfly, with excellent details, colors, pov, exposure.

Love the pretty flower as well.

Great work, thank you for sharing it with us!

Quite a good shot for a little point and shoot camera. I love the composition, the space on the left is excellent in my opinion.

Thanks, Peter - a new species! I've never caught up with this tiny "frit" - its antennae look completely out of proportion with the rest of the insect! I wonder why so many fritillaries are dependent on Viola spp.?
Regards, Nigel.

Absolutely beautiful capture, the colors and details are amazing. The DOF is right on target creating a beautiful soft background. :)

Deine Schmetterlingsbilder sind ja ganz toll, bin voller Bewunderung. Die Gestaltung mit der Blume und der Platzierung des Falters ist mal wieder pefekt.
