Rainy days are good days.

Glad to be back after a long break, my dear friends -

and happy to report that the summer of 2009 has been the rainiest one reported since 1965 from the Austrian Alps, so far. Short periods of hot days would end up in thunderstorms, followed by periods of cool weather with frequent showers of rain, sometimes even snow down to the forest line. Certainly not the best conditions for farmers, nor for cross-country hikers either, but excellent conditions for seeing flowers in abundance – and their visitors: plenty of butterflies taking their chance in sunny moments, and at cool weather conditions really patient and cooperative objects to photographers, like that one:

Boloria selene (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)

Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillary, Braunfleckiger Perlmutterfalter, Zilveren maan, Brunlig perlemorsommerfugl, Brunflekket perlemorvinge, Brunfläckig pärlemorfjäril, Niittyhoperhopeatäplä, Dostojka selene, Petit collier argenté, Perlada Castaña, Selene.
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Heliconiinae

Wing span: 38 – 41 mm

Widespread in the temperate zone of the Northern hemisphere, Boloria selene is a regular and fairly common inhabitant of Alpine meadows and forest clearings up to 2200m above sea level, flying in two generations in May and June and in July and August at lower elevations, and obviously in just one generation in July at higher elevations, as here.

The species loves humid alpine meadows in rich blossom. Caterpillars feed on Viola.

The plant:

Crepis aurea (L.) Cass.
Family: Asteraceae,

a picturesque flower growing in small numbers on alpine meadows above silicate from 1500m to 3000m.


The location:

Stabele-Alm at an elevation of 1900m, near Längenfeld, Oetztal valley, Tyrol.

*A new model of bridge cameras out of the Sony DSC-H series, similar to the H5 and the H50, now coming with zoom optics covering the range of 28mm to 560mm focal length equivalent.

Postwork:

Photoshop Elements, slightly cropped, resized to web, selectively resharpened, levels slighty adjusted.

excellent the composition of colors that give a great contrast between the little Nymphalidae and the colorful flower on the BG with fine details and optimal game of light. Focusing is perfect.

Welcome back!
A superb capture of B. selene with the open wings seen from below on the C. aurea flower with excellent total sharpness against the fine OOF mountain slope BG.
Once again one really has the feeling that this was taken in the Alps!
I could see on the weather reports that you have had a rainy summer but I hope you have been able to take more pictures as good as this.

Lieber Peter,
Deine Mondgöttin leuchtet ja wie eine Sonne! Ein Bild, das nur von Dir stammen kann mit diesem ganz besonderen Bildaufabau. Sehr schöner Farbkontrast zwischen grauem Hintergrund und den leuchtenden Schmetterling und Blume. Auch ist die im Hintergrund erkennbare Bergkante fast parallel zum Hauptsujet. Hat mich natürlich sehr gefreut, wieder ein Bild von Dir auf TN zu sehen. Bin ein wenig verspätet, da mich seit einer Woche die Grippe fest in ihren Händen hält :-(
