Lestes sponsa (Hansemann, 1823)
Family: Lestidae

The Emerald Damselfly is 3.5cm long, found in Europe, Asia and North Africa. When resting, its wings are usually half opened (a characteristic of the family Lestidae). Males have a dark metallic green tone, while females appear rather coppery. The Emerald Damselfly can survive up to 30 minutes under water.
Preferred habitats of this species are pools, ponds and moorlands. A population can consist of several hundred insects. The Emerald Damselfly is one of the most frequent kinds of damselflies in Europe, since it adapts very well to many environmental changes.
This species is most common in July and August. Emerald Damselflies like to perch among reeds, their colour providing good camouflage.

The mauve tones of the background is due to the Common Heather (Calluna vulgaris), widespread on the moorland of the natural reserve of Kalmthout.

About the DOF
Photo taken with a monopod. There were quite wind on that day and the DOF is sometimes very short... I must say that I forgot that I can shot in ISO 200 even 400 for a better DOF... It seems that I am learning from my mistakes...

Hello Catherine,

Very impressive macro shot of the Emerald Damselfly!
The colors of the damselfly are well shown with great sharpness. The POV and DOF are well managed. Well detailed hairs and wing structures. The blurred BG is just awesome.
Great job!

Excellent capture! I love these critters and shoot as many as I can - anything that loves to eat mosquitoes is my friend! Details are fantastic, lighting superb, and capture is beautiful.

Fine shot of this damsel, yes the DOF could have been better, but at least you have realised your "mistake" :).
Good sharpness and details around teh upper parts and wings. Good OOF background.

Hello Catherine!

Beautifull picture. Damselfly is sharp and well composed. DOF isn't bad - eyes are sharp same as most parts of body. I love BG with blurred, colorfull circles. Great shot.

Even the hair on my legs look thinner.
Long time never watch such a beautiful macro.
A good share.
Best regards.

I shot proboscis at the feeding time in sanctuary. They come to the feeding places on the verge of the mangrove forest

nice pink background you have got here :)

I've missed this one when u uploaded it, great shot. Very well executed against the light. Not too many recent shots for me hope fall will change that.

cheers
