Appearance
The African fish eagle is a fairly large eagle. It has a distinctive black, brown, and white plumage.

Diet
Although, as its name suggests, it feeds extensively on fish, in some areas it preys on flamingoes and other water birds. It is also known to eat carrion and is classified as a kleptoparasite (it steals prey from other birds). Goliath Herons are known to lose a percentage of their catch to Fish Eagles. Their main diet is fish, sometimes dead, but mostly caught live. Catfish and lungfish are caught most frequently.

Behaviour
The African Fish Eagle has two distinct calls. In flight or perched, the sound is something like the American Bald Eagle. When near the nest its call is more of a 'quock' sound - the female is a little shriller and less mellow than the male. So well known and clear is the call of this bird that it is often known as 'the voice of Africa'. The African Fish Eagle is usually seen in pairs inside and outside the breeding season, even sharing kills made by either of them. They spend more time perched than flying, and usually settle for the day by 10am, having made their kill, although they will kill at any time of the day.

Habitat
It is most frequently seen sitting high in a tall tree from where it has a good view of the stretch of river, lakeshore or coastline, which is its territory. Near a lake with an abundant food supply, a pair may require less than a square mile of water to find enough food, whereas next to a small river, they may require a stretch of 15 miles or more. Some tend to move around to avoid the wettest weather, whereas others stay where they are all year round.

Yes this another one from the Antwerpen Zoo. I think that this Zoo is very special in his sorts of birds. I think our sud- Afikaner here on the site will enjoy the shot, because the bird is also living there. I have made this shot I hope you like it too.

A majestic bird well seen Jaap and he certainly has you in his beady eye, the only thing I would do would be to add a fraction of sharpening to lift it up from the very good OOF BG.

Wonderful picture!! As always; supersharp, good POV & DOF. Goed gedaan Jaap. :)

What a majestic bird, Jaap! Very impressive with its white pectoral feathery layer. Great color rendering and POV. Informative note. I kind of agree with Robert about edge sharpness. Nonetheless a great shot, Jaap. TFS

Like Joanna said - it looks kind a old English judge :-) Or maybe as eagle from Muppet Show :-) Great bird and great picture Jaap!

Well done, Jaap. A beautiful bird, almost like our Baldy in North America.
My tip, is to maybe have less space on the right and a little more on the left, because he is looking that way.
Well done on this shoot.

Mike

Absolute corker Jaap. High on my wishlist. We have two pairs flying around here in the city where I live. The closest I got to them was about 50 metres and then he was high on a tree about 30metres up. With my camera, that gives me a bird that is so small I can't do anything with it. Hopefully, I succeed soon.
Excellent, I love it.

Jaap, Very good details & exposure on the whites. The darker OOF BG helps alot here to make the subject stand out also..I agree with Mike that space rt would be better since the eagle is looking that in that direction. An excellent note...Well done!!

Very nice work Jaap, he looks very authoritive. I feel the photo could be a little bit sharper but it's good. Well done.

Nice capture of a beautiful bird Jaap. A little soft on focus/sharpness but the colours are good. Personally I would prefer more space in front of the bird and less behind - apart from that it is a very nice capture and a good note.

Mooi werk hier!
Groeten,
John.

Hi Jaap
Believe it, the five noted cal of this guy is even more beautiful than he is, and this IS one of the most beautiful eagles. Not as robust as his American bald cousin, but the brown and white are more pleasing to me than the bald eagles. You did a very good job here, well done!

Very proud regal bird, I like how tall he's standing. Well done.
