The Green Emerald damselfly or Willow Emerald Damselfly has a metallic green body and at rest it holds its wings away from its body.
L. viridis is found across southern and central Europe. Mainly slow flowing or stagnant water in ponds, lakes and canals, with overhanging willows alders or birches, which are used for breeding.
In Britain it was a rare vagrant and is now a new colonist. It is widespread on Jersey.
Both sexes are mainly metallic green, like other Lestes damselflies, but larger, darker and without pruinescence. The pterostigma is pale brown and outlined in black. The thorax has thin yellow antehumerals and broader yellow stripe above a thin black line on each side; the upper edge of the stripe is irregular, often with a black spur.
Male - The abdomen is very long. The lower anal appendages are less than half the length of the upper which are a distinctive pale yellow with black tips.
Female - The ovipositor is longer than in Scarce Emerald Damselfly ( Lestes dryas).
Flight period is late from August to October. Males defend vertical territories in marginal trees. They often stray from water. The eggs are laid into incisions in the bark of overhanging branches, resulting in distinct oval galls. (Wikipedia)

Hi Catherine. Firstly very good use of the lightin this close up picture of a late damselfly . Which you have taken with fine detail and such natural colours. I can see the little cobwebs on the plant. Well taken TFS.

Bonjour Catherine,

Voici une excellente photo de ce leste vert encore présent en ce début d'automne. Les couleurs sont de saison. Ici, dans le Brabant Wallon ou le long du canal Charleroi-Bruxelles, je n'en vois plus. Très agréable lumière dans ta photo (malgré une journée peu ensoleillée :)et arrière plan parfait!

A beautifully executed close up study of this fine L. viridis specimen in a natural posture Catherine, sharpness is perfect and the back-lighted wings really "illuminate" the damsel against that darkish BG. Thanks for sharing this splendid image.
