A beautiful specimen of Baldcypress at the National botanical garden of Meise.
Taxodium distichum, also known as baldcypress, bald cypress, or swamp cypress, is a species of deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States. Baldcypress is a large tree, reaching 30-45 m tall and trunk diameter of up to 3 m.
The leaves are borne on deciduous branchlets that are spirally arranged on the stem but twisted at the base to lie in two horizontal ranks. The cones are green maturing gray-brown, globular, 2-3.5 cm in diameter.
Baldcypress growing in swamps have a peculiarity of growth called cypress knees. These are woody projections sent above the ground or water that are part of the root system. Their function was once thought to be to provide oxygen to the roots and assure a structural support and stabilization.

Le cyprès chauve (Taxodium distichum), ou cyprès de Louisiane, est un arbre de la famille des Cupressacées, originaire du Sud-Est des États-Unis. C’est un grand arbre, pouvant atteindre 30 à 45 mètres de haut, et large, avec un tronc d'un diamètre atteignant jusqu'à 3 mètres.
Le feuillage léger, gracieux et souple est formé de feuilles disposées en spirales sur les rameaux mais tordues à leur base, ce qui les fait paraître disposées en deux rangs aplatis. Les cônes verts, tournant au gris brun à maturité, sont de forme globuleuse et mesurent de 2 à 3,5 cm de diamètre.
Les cyprès chauves croissant dans les marais se distinguent par la croissance de racines aériennes particulières, les pneumatophores. Ces organes lignifiés, qui peuvent atteindre 1,7 m de haut, émergent du sol ou de l'eau tout autour du tronc. Leurs fonctions semblent être doubles, d'une part assurer la fourniture d'oxygène à la plante, d'autre part assurer une meilleure stabilisation et un meilleur ancrage de l'arbre dans le sol.
