No butterfly today on the Botanic Garden. The season is over. But I discover this little and colorful insect.

The Rhododendron leafhopper or Scarlet and green leafhopper (Graphocephala fennahi), so named as it feeds on the sap of rhododendrons, is native to the USA. The species was introduced to Great Britain in the 1930s and continental Europe in the 1970s.
Both adults and larvae feed on Rhododendron sap, and it is one of the few insects to use this shrub as a foodplant. Adults can be found from mid-summer until quite late in the autumn, laying eggs in the leaf buds which hatch the following spring.
Adult: July-November - Length 8-10 mm (British bugs)
--------------------------------------------------------

Hello Catherine,

There is a very good DOF in your photo kepeeng the whole insect in focus and therefore rendering good sharp details. You have used very well the light showing very fine, saturated colors. There is a fine match between the colors of the insect and the leaf beneath.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Catherine,
you show us a nice and detailed picture of this small and colouful insect.
It is excellent with respect to focus, sharpness and composition.
A slightly lower viewing angle would have been also interesting.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Catherine,

well taken, this leafhopper! It's a tiny, jumpy fellow, not easy to approach with a macro lens. But you got all the details sharp, one could even count the bristles if need be. Well done.

Best regards
Dietrich

Hi Catherine!
Interesting to know that this colourful insect originaly comes from N America. It is also very interestig to know how it appeared in European countries and when.
According to the picture I must say that thanks to rich colouration it is not possible to overlook this image. Nice sharpness and DOF too. Maybe the light is a little too strong (especially in left part of photo), but it is just a small thing.
Greetings from Lodz,
Radomir

Hi Catherine

A delightful capture of this colourful little leafhopper.
It is quite an amazing colour scheme it has.
The macro show good details of the insect and the DOF covered the range very well.
The composition is also fine with the subject positioned along the diagonal line.

Very well done and TFS.
