Perigrapha munda (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
(Previous names: Anorthoa munda, Orthosia munda)
En: Twin-spotted Quaker
Wingspan 38-44 mm.

A variable species, with forewings ranging from pale buff to reddish-brown. The blackish twin spots are usually obvious, but in some forms, including ab. immaculata, these are reduced to barely discernible rufous marks, or obsolete.
It is widely distributed in woodland habitats in England and Wales, but local in Ireland and Scotland.
Flying in March and April, like several related species, it can be found feeding on sallow blossom at night.
The caterpillars feed in early summer on various trees, including oak (Quercus), aspen (Populus tremulata) and sallow (Salix).

I found this caterpillar on the bark of a oak. Taken with a monopod and a Sigma macro ring flash. Photo rotated.

Hi Catherine. This one is well hidden against the wood. I had a job to see it at first. Once again you have taken fine detail and natural colours. well done TFS.

Hello Catherine!

Very well camouflaged caterpillar. Very good quality of picture - sharp, with good details, DOF and natural colours. I hope will see also imago soon. Interesting post.

Very interesting photo

Hi MF Catherine, an awesome macro capture of this caterpillar from wonderful low POV with fine composition and details.
TFS and have a nice Sunday!
Cheers,
Bayram

I like tha pattern detail on the shiny head.
Cheers & TFS
Steve

Indeed it does resemble those I have seen on some trees after falling...they leave an unusual pattern in the bark. It was the first thing I thought of even before reading it creeps on Oaks...being a tree love...it wold not make me feel badly if nature took its course on these before they damaged my trees...but I am only a caretaker. Your thought provoking image is well received.
