Just back from a short walk in the National Botanic Garden of Belgium. I saw a few butterflies and this nice dragonfly, easy to approach.

Sympetrum striolatum (Charpentier, 1840)
Family: Libellulidae

The Common Darter is a dragonfly native to Eurasia. It is one of the most common dragonflies in Europe, occurring in a wide variety of water bodies, though with a preference for breeding in still water such as ponds and lakes. Adults are on the wing from June until November - occasionally into December.
Females have light yellow thorax and abdomen. Males turn red as they mature. Females darken with age, becoming a dark chocolate brown, and sometimes develop a blue colouration to the bottom of the abdomen. The wings also develop a brown tinge with age. In all cases the legs have a cream or yellow stripe on a black background - this is a diagnostic feature of this species. (Wikipedia)

Hi Catherine. Sounds like you enjoyed your walk. This was a nice Common Darter to see. You made the most of it and have taken a fine close up . Using the light to its best to give good detail and natural colours. I like the pose with the plain green BG. well done TFS.

Hello Catherine,
A very fine macro of a female S. striolatum, the lateral POV being taken with excellent sharpness and lighting to show her features against a great natural green neutral BG.
Thanks and enjoy the rest of your weekend,
Ivan

Bonjour Catherine,
