Sitta europaea – E:European Nuthatch – D:Kleiber
His german name is related to the word glue, describing his habit to close the entrance of nesting caves to fit his size only. For this he uses clay and glues it to the tree, as you can see it very nicely in this picture.
He is the only european bird which is able to climb down treetrunks headdown. He cracks nuts by fixing them in cracks of the tree bark and splits them using his pecker like an axe.
The pic is made from a bridge crossing the belgium river "Weser" (don´t mix up with the german on). It´s in the German-Belgium Naturpark near Roetgen/Raeren. The Bridge is the "Bellesforter Brücke". The major paths in the woods were used from Roman times as well as in the medieval ages for pilgrim travel.

The Zoom of my compact cam is at its limit, guess i´ll try some digiscoping in the near future.

Very interesting notes Werner. The bird is a little out of focus, so it is a bit hard to see, but what he has done to the tree is very clear. I've never heard of this bird before. Thanks for showing...
