[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the first Orchid I see this year. In Belgium, it's the beginning of the Orchid season. Of course, it is a common one, but I hope to show you some others during the coming weeks.
Tolerant of a wide range of habitats, the Heath Spotted-orchid (Dactylorhiza maculate) is very common throughout Europe.
This orchid grows to around 20 cm in height which is generally smaller than the Common Spotted-orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsia) with which it is often confused. The lip of the Heath Spotted-orchid is also more rounded and without the exaggerated central tooth found on the Common Spotted-orchid. It generally prefers the acid soils associated with heaths, bogs and marshland although it will sometimes invade the more calcareous habitats favoured by the Common Spotted-orchid. (First Nature)

C'est la première orchidée que je vois cette année. En Belgique, ce n'est que le début de leur saison. Bien sûr, elle est assez commune, mais j'espère vous en présenter d'autres dans les prochaines semaines.
En Europe, on peut trouver l'Orchis tacheté (Dactylorhiza maculata) pratiquement dans tous les pays d’Europe, jusqu'au nord de la Scandinavie et de la Russie, mais il est très rare ou absent dans les zones méditerranéennes. Il a été signalé en montagne jusqu'à 2300 m d'altitude.
L'Orchis tacheté est capable de s'adapter à un large éventail de milieux acides, secs ou humides. Il peut coloniser les prairies humides, les bois et lisières sur sols siliceux, la périphérie des tourbières, ainsi que les bas- marais acides à neutres et même des fossés de bord de route. Il fleurit principalement au mois de juin.
L'Orchis tacheté est une plante élancée, souvent robuste, haute de 20 à 60 cm. Il est muni d'une tige mince et pleine, généralement teintée de violet au sommet. Il possède des feuilles allongées, lancéolées, longues de 10 à 15 cm, étalées à dressées, le plus souvent fortement maculées sur la face supérieure, ce qui a donné son nom à cette espèce. L'inflorescence est dense, conique puis cylindrique et est composée de 15 à 50 fleurs souvent pâles, blanchâtres à rosées, parfois lilas foncé. Les bractées sont vertes comme les feuilles et souvent maculées de violet.
Les sépales latéraux sont étalés à presque dressés et maculés en dedans, leur sommet réfléchi ou rabattu. Le labelle est orbiculaire ou en forme de coeur renversé (obcordiforme), plan à peu convexe, orné de points, de tirets et de lignes pourpres à violacés, formant souvent des boucles au centre.
Les lobes latéraux du labelle sont arrondis et sont aussi longs ou plus longs que le lobe médian très étroit et court, ce dernier caractère étant utilisé pour distinguer l'Orchis tacheté d'une espèce très voisine, l'Orchis de Fuchs (Dactylorhiza fuchsii). Enfin, le labelle est prolongé par un éperon grêle, long de 4 à 10 mm environ, blanchâtre et descendant parallèlement à l'ovaire. (Biodiversité Wallonie)

What a beautiful photo with the orchid you did. I like very much the way you used DOF starting with the sharp flowers in front and gradualy loosing sharpness on the rest of the flower spike. It is also remarcable the way you used natural light rendering very nice the natural colors of the flowers.

Bonjour Catherine,
Vous nous offrez un bel Orchis tacheté. Ma première idée fut : une ouverture à F16 aurait donné un peu plus de PdC pour avoir la fleur entièrement nette. Mais vous n'étiez déjà qu'à 1/50s et puis pour finir cela donne un bel effet ainsi !
