Kingdom: Plantae
(unranked): Angiosperms
(unranked): Monocots
Order: Asparagales
Family: Ruscaceae
Genus: Convallaria
Species: C. majalis
Toxicology:
Convallarin and convallotoxin are two toxins found in this garden plant. Convallotoxin has an LD50 of 0.08 mg/kg, the smallest value, being equal to only 5 mg for a person who weights 62 kg. Despite the inherent potency of Convallaria toxin, however, overdoses are not always fatal because the concentration in the plant is low. Convallotoxin and other cardiac glycosides act by inhibiting the enzyme, Na+K+ATPase, which increases ATP. They thereby act on the heart muscle, the myocardium to increase contractility and will support a failing heart especially in congestive heart failure. For those glycosides employed medicinally, overdose is common because the therapeutic and toxic doses are close. Intoxication with Convallaria causes bradycardia and heartblock (uncoordinated heartbeat) progressing to fibrillation and cardiac arrest. Lily of the valey is similar in morphology to wild garlic and some deaths resulted when it was mistaken as such and made into a sousp.

Hi Oana,
A very good capture of these beautiful flowers. Beauty but dangerous. Sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Oana,

An excellent note and a really beautiful photo of this attractive Spring-time beauty. A perfect composition, looks like it should be a greeting-card!

I have a colony of this plant that my mother planted decades ago. I love the aroma of the flowers, but it is difficult to keep it growing where I want it, as it spreads rampantly. I occasionally see a colony of it in the woods here too, as it has escaped from cultivation and is becoming part of the North American flora too.

Its foliage does slightly resemble our Wild Leek, Allium tricoccum, which is gathered for food in some parts of the country, so I can see how it could be a hazard to one's health if you don't know your plants.

Thanks,
John

Hi Oana!

Deadly or not, they are beautiful. And your composition highlights their beauty at best. I like the transition from sharp to blurred very much. This attracts the eye to the one flower giving a fine overall impression at the same time. Interesting notes, too.

Many thanks

Markus
