Latin Name: Eudocimus ruber
length: between 58 and 90 cm
Living in: Coastal zones and marshes inside the grounds
They eat: crabs and other small watery invertebrates (especially shellfish) Reproduction: Oviparous
3 or 4 eggs per laying
additional information: The red ibis niche in large colonies; these last can include ten thousand individuals in the mangroves and this, of the coastal zones of the east of South America, of Venezuela to Brazil. Unfortunately, such gatherings are done increasingly rare, the red ibis having been victim of multiple massacres for its splendid feathers and its flesh. The beautiful red color of its feathers is due to the carotenoid pigments which abound in its favorite food (like crabs or other marine invertebrates). |
