Heriades truncorum, a small (6 mm) megachilid bee. This female is in the last stage of closing her nest in a hollow bamboo stem. She uses a mixture of resin and sand grains to make a very resistant barrier . Yet, some parasite or other will probably be able to by-pass it and lay its eggs in the nest cells. Only a small percentage of the brood will escape and make it to maturity.
Note how the bee, in common with the other megachilids, transports pollen in a brush underneath the abdomen, and not on the legs as the honey bee. does. |
