Today, on another beautiful day of our Indian Summer, I had the chance to see many Queen of Spain Fritillaries on a field. They were laying eggs in the soil, on the foot of their hostplant. And I’m happy to see that because it is a threatened species in Belgium. This one is resting on the sun.

The Queen of Spain Fritillary is a common butterfly in southern Europe, migrating as far north as south Scandinavia every summer. It is also found in North Africa, India, Central Asia, Himalayas and China.
Heat-dependent, this species is found breeding on the hottest places of the foodplants of the larvae (prefers Viola tricolor and Viola arvensis). The adult is a strong flyer, and may be found anywhere but forests.
The eggs of this species are laid on the Wild Pansy.
Flight time is between March and October, size is between 38 mm and 46 mm, and is usually found at altitudes between sea level and 2700 m. (Wikipedia)
It is a threatened species in Belgium. In Flanders only one population in the extreme south-west of the province of West-Vlaanderen, regularly enforced with vagrants (Lepidoptera of Belgium). It is still more widespread in Wallonia, the southern part of Belgium where it is on the Red List (VU).

Hello Catherine,
It's not easy to achieve total sharpness when taking a shot of a butterfly with open wings from this POV, but you managed to take this I. lathonia with almost total sharpness by focusing on just the right spot!
Nice composition against a pleasing neutral BG and the WS shows a fine view of the underside.

Bonjour Catherine,
Un papillon qui semble réapparaître en automne, aussi chez nous. Il est si spécial, une classe à part! J'aime beaucoup ton image du WS, très puissante et qui montre à merveille la beauté de ses ailes inférieures. J'aurais éventuellement interchangé les deux images,bien que ton image principale ne manque pas de qualité non plus.
