Memories of the September warm days....

Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family : Nymphalidae

This Painted Lady is almost global in its distribution.
In general, the Painted Lady is a large butterfly (wing span 5--9–cm (2--2 7/8 in)) identified by the black and white corners of its mainly deep orange, black-spotted wings. It has 5 white spots in the black forewing tips and while the orange areas may be pale here and there, there are no clean white dots in them. The hindwings carry 4 small submarginal eyespots on dorsal and ventral sides. Those on the dorsal side are black, but in the summer morph sometimes small blue pupils are present in some. (Wikipedia)

Issoria lathonia (Linné, 1758)
Family: Nymphalidae

The Queen of Spain Fritillary is a common butterfly in southern Europe, migrating as far north as south Scandinavia every summer. It is also found in North Africa, India, Central Asia, Himalayas and China.
Heat-dependent, this species is found breeding on the hottest places of the foodplants of the larvae (prefers Viola tricolour and Viola arvensis). The adult is a strong flyer, and may be found anywhere but forests.
The eggs of this species are laid on the Wild Pansy.
Flight time is between March and October, size is between 38 mm and 46 mm, and is usually found at altitudes between sea level and 2700 m. (Wikipedia)
It is a threatened species in Belgium. In Flanders only one population in the extreme south-west of the province of West-Vlaanderen, regularly enforced with vagrants (Lepidoptera of Belgium). It is still more widespread in Wallonia, the southern part of Belgium where it is on the Red List (VU).

Dear Catherine!

The Painted Lady is a well known butterfly, but you present it in a very beautiful and delicate manner. The fine pastel colou tones . similar to the ones of the butterfly - highlight the impression of "Golden Beauties" at best.

Kind regards

Markus
