The Common Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) is a butterfly of the Pieridae family.
The Brimstone is a beautiful insect, and a grand master of camouflage - the pale greenish underside, with raised wing-veins, and falcate wing tips all contributing to disguise the butterfly as a leaf, and making it near invisible when at rest under bramble or ivy leaves.
Both sexes emerge simultaneously in late June; or early July if the season is late. Favourite summer nectar sources include Marsh Thistle, Knapweed, Small Scabious, Devil's-bit Scabious, Hawkbit, Marjoram, Bramble, Buddliea, Spreading Bellflower etc. The butterflies enter hibernation in August or early September. Typical hibernation sites include bramble bushes, ivy clumps, and tussocks of pendulous sedge. (Source)

Hello Catherine,
This female Brimstone butterfly looks like a fallen leaf in the Convulvolus flower in this well composed sharp image, which makes it rather unusual and quite appealing. The technical aspects and light management are top class.
TFS this delight,
Ivan

Hello Catherine!

Perfect exposure of both flower and butterfly. Nice composition and POV. Not only insect is important on your photo - leaves are well showed, too.
