Volucella pellucens
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Volucella pellucens is a largish and attractive fly, belonging to the family Syrphidae(Hover-flies. Its biology is remarkable : the females enter unmolested the nest of the most intolerant wasp species like Vespula vulgaris and germanica (the common amd german wasps). Any other creature, no matter its size , would be attacked and probably killed for this outrage, but the wasps do not seem to notice Volucella. The latter lays her eggs inside the nest, and when Volucella larvae hatch, they fall to the bottom of the nest, and feast on dead wasps and their dead grubs or other wastes, thereby cleaning the nest. The mutual benefit for the two species is evident food and a fantastic protection against predators for the fly, cleanliness and hygiene for the wasp...
The picture is somewhat noisy, but I hope the subject redeems a little the lack of technical quality |
