This new butterfly is beautiful but he lost a part of his wing ;-) Where did you see this species ?
The "+++" : composition, subject, wings well open, POV, sharpness, DOF, blurred BG, soft tones, exposure...
The "-" : nothing...

Id or not, this is a superb capture!!!
I really like the simple composition here that, together with the excellent POV, shows us the beautiful pattern of its wings.
Also the contrast with the surrounding here is exceptional and the details are terrific!

Hello Annick,

How beautiful! We don't have this species here, nor do we have butterfly gardens. The light in your shot is magic!

Composition:

You present this butterfly in a very pleasant and appealing composition! I usually avoid placing the subject into the middle of the frame but I can't find any other way of cropping to improve this one. I like it the way it looks now! The foreground is well isolated from everything else thanks to an absolutely superb and well blurred background! The plant that supports the butterfly is a requirement for your composition! I wish the left wing wasn't broken in the rear part. Of course, this wasn't something that you could control!

Colors:

The colors in your picture are easy to look at! They look natural and reveal great textures in the butterfly's wings! By including the plant in the picture you enhance the chromatic range and create complementarity between red and green. This also helps isolating the insect from the background!

Contrast:

The contrast in your picture is very well distributed. By having lower contrast in the background you emphasize the subject in the foreground which is a big plus. The contrast also enhances the details in the butterfly.

Exposure:

You managed the light very well! I appreciate that you sacrificed small highlights in the leaves to achieve such an outstanding exposure on the butterfly. The details in the black areas are clearly visible without overexposing the highlights in the reflections of the light off the butterfly's wings. The light in your picture is simply wonderful! The noise level is very low in spite of the ISO 400 setting! Great job here!

Focus:

It's useless to speak about focus since the excellent details speak for themselves! You must have been very close to get such an outstanding background with f/8 at 165 mm! Great DOF!
