[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Butterflies are in the order of insects called Lepidoptera.
With Lepidoptera is derived from the Latin word "lepido" which means scale + "ptera" which means wing. Butterflies have a head, thorax, abdomen, two antennae, six legs and a coiled proboscis for drinking liquids such as flower nectar. Butterflies have four wings that are usually covered by colored scales.

Butterflies are very important in our world.
There are more than 20,000 different kinds of butterflies in the world.
With the majority being found in tropical environments. Butterflies are important as plant pollinators and as food for other animals (birds, mammals, spiders, and other insects). Butterflies are also very sensitive to changes in the environment, and help warn us about unhealthy changes that are taking place.

Butterflies are gaining attention as wildlife worthy of conservation efforts. Attempts to conserve and manage butterfly populations have been initiated by the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973, as well as many state and local jurisdictions. Many conservation groups have also taken action to promote the protection of butterflies whose populations are declining.

This picture is taken on the terril in waterschei, it was a very bright day and upon the hill aprox. 200 meters above the ground there were these colourfull creatures....didn't know we had these in Belgium...If anyone knows the specific name off this one ..I would be glad to put it in the note as well !!

Thanks to PDP we now have the name!!

Swallowtail or Papilio machaon

This kind off butterflies the males gather together on the top off hills to wait for the females...and then make sure they are reproduced..This specie is also considered very selden..

I'm pretty sure this is a swallowtail, maybe Papilio machaon?

First post here? I decided to stick to English on this forum as most can read it. It appears as if this one is really built for speed, look at the front wings! This sis na nice picture of one who has been throgh the world, and lost some dignaty, but tatterd, he is surviving

Hi Leon, welcome to TN and great first posting. Fine closeup of this swallowtail, with a nice semi-diagonal positioning and a good rendition of the anatomical details. The colors are quite spectacular, too. Very good start.

Pleasing yellow tones bring this butterfly out and the head is nice and clear. I'm not sure if the wings are naturally appearing as they do here or if they have been sharpened. Good note

Leon, nice one of this Lepidoptera. I have the feeling of some 3D effect; the butterfly appears to stand before the background. I have the impression that sharpness is not optimal.
